The General, a US Civil war locomotive

The engine burns the diesel oil in the firebox, just as it did wood. As I said, there aren't a lot of broad gauge rails on Trainz, and would not look right along with the other equipment. I'm afraid sometimes prototypicality must be sacrificed for better compatability. The MSTS Civil War General is Standard gauge, and it looks fine. Really, only nitpickers would care if it wasn't exactly like the original.:p

Forgot to add that the tender that will be offered (soon!!) WILL have wood in it, and it will be animated. The wood on the re-fitted engine was for looks only, (same here), and I left it animated to be a kind of fuel gauge.

My two cents says to keep it standard gauge. As you mentioned above, it'll fit on most routes if left this way.

Looking real sweet, tbryson2. Great job!

:)

To further explain, when the locomotive was reconditioned for and extensive centennial tour in 1962,a large oil tank, and gas engine with a generator were installed in the tender. The wood load was stacked in a way to hide the whole deal. That is why THIS version of the General is an oil burner. It ran this way from 1962 to 1967. No need to worry, older versions will burn the appropriate fuel. A future version may burn E-85! Ha ha. Joe S.

Wanted to clarify that the gas engine was to power a compressor for the installed airbrakes that were normally not on the engine. ;)

As for the Civil War version, I would keep it SG because having one American BG engine would get a little wacky since there is no content out there for it. If you got really bored, you could make both:hehe:

Ok, seems the general mindset is to keep it SG. I approve of that! (Makes my job easier!)

Although Springtransit did have a valid point, perhaps sometime in the future this can be worked out.

Thanks to everyone for voicing their opinions.

For now, expect to find the Civil War General, Texas and Yonah in Standard Gauge.

ALMOST READY!!!

:D The engine / tender is going through one more Trainz04 test and if I get the testers blessings, I will release it.

Not sure if I posted this before, but changes to the "beta" version are:

1. Driving wheels are now properly oriented.
2. Textures have been tweaked and are more realistic.
3. CAB VIEW works! Windows open, brake levers work as well as the throttle and Johnson bar.
4. Steam injector works, (Small "T" handle next to steam gauge). It seems to be automated with the new enginespecs.
5. GAUGES ARE RECREATIONS OF THE ACTUAL GAUGES ON THE REAL ENGINE. Reproduced in PSP from photographs.
6. All gauges work and are "calibrated" to display properly.
7. Wheels turn properly in both Cab mode and DCC mode
8. Added brakes to the engine mesh to represent the brakes added in the 1960's rebuild
9. Whistle and other cab sounds are unique or upgraded.
10. Front coupler is now animated.
11. Tender texture has been tweaked to look better.
12. Wood no longer shows up through tender walls as it descends when it is being used up.
13. Mesh on tender was slightly modified to eliminate some bizarre lighting issues when the sun hit it.
14. Tender refuels using Phil C's Diesel refilling station. Animated "filling cranes" activate when needed.
15. Engine now burns Diesel fuel as does the real engine.
16. The wood is animated in the tender only as a visual "fuel gauge".
17. Modern coupler on tender represents real tender in museum.

Without the help of such people like RPearson, Pencil42, bdaneal, and others it wouldn't be anywhere near as good as she is!
MANY MANY thanks to everyone!

Terry

Gawd, I can hardly wait...:udrool:

Since this one isn't a wood burner, why don't you re-texture the wood pile to coal?

Just a suggestion...;)

In the 1880's the General was converted to coal, like many wood-burners. They gave it a diamond sack in the process. But it wasnt long till it was converted back to wood, and an older style balloon stack installed. (Possibly the 4th stack to be on the engine,at this point). The General was used in excursions as it was 30 years old and not up to regular service.

You're probably right, spiffy! I think we'll finally have a 4-4-0 engine that carries over the look and feel of a real American Standard engine! (Marlboro's American and Greg Baker's Old timer don't have that feel, the Reading Camelback had some, but it of course, is too modern and unique; the VR Rogers loco is nice, but is incomplete, and bdaneal's engines are also very nice, but they've still got a bit more work to do.)

I can't list any engine but this one that has all of the following,

A. Custom Cab
B. Custom Whistle
C. Good Looking
D. Custom Sounds
E. American

There might be other locos out there that have all of this, but this is probably one of the best American steam contribution.

Thank you for the kind words! :D I've put a LOT of time into this engine. More than anyone should. Can't expect everyone to do the same.

I know I've been saying "soon" for awhile now, but I truly do mean it. IF my job permits I would think that it will be available by this weekend at the latest. I've done everything possible to it to make it complete AND correct before releasing it. It's being tested by another person right now, and as soon as he gives me a clean bill of health I'll release it.

I can ALWAYS find more things to "tweak" and clean up, but that's just me. I need to get it uploaded just so I can be done with this project! (And start the next!!!)

Yeah, at least your Civil War version will be easier. You don't need the custom sounds, I think, or the cab. They're already made!

He might want to make a cab for the Civil War version, as they are much different even though it's the same engine. You know how these cabs are!:p
