The DLS Process needs fixing.......

Which might work if only you knew what the missing asset was. If all you are shown is an unknown kuid number, good luck. And besides unless there is another method, the replace asset function only works if both assets are already in your Trainz. Deleting missing assets is fine but then how do you know where it was to even guess what it might have been?

Much better if all assets used in a publicly released route are on the DLS.

There is an extremely easy fix to "replace asset" when the asset is unknown:

1. Clone a known asset. ( A medium sized Tree, for example)
2. Open for Edit in Explorer.
3. Copy asset folder.
4. Paste asset folder to Desktop.
5. Manually change cloned asset KUID to that of the "unknown" asset.
6. Edit TEXTURE of asset to be a "Bold" color...such as Purple, neon Green, or bright Red.
7. Use "Import Content" feature to import the "unknown" asset into CM, and commit.
8. Go to Route, and look for your medium sized Purple Tree..."Replace Asset"

Note: Once you have this "asset finder asset", you can change the KUID to any other at anytime to find as many other "unknowns" as you like...you only have to edit textures once, and change KUID as needed then re-import.

I've heard of that method, but never thought of trying it. [EDIT] Forgot to mention, you don't have to change the color of the item you changing to the missing assets KUID.

True, you don't HAVE to change the color if it is beyond your ability to do so, but it does make it easier to finda Purple tree, in a forest area, for example.
--The idea behind this method, to be able to identify the Asset that is "unknown", and be able to replace with a "like" asset.

Gentlemen,

Although the above is very helpful........Please DO NOT HI-JACK the thread.
It would be helpful to far more people if you started your own thread.

Thank You,

I think that, in general, the DLS is fine. I think that requiring all dependencies to be on the DLS will unnecessarily restrict content. That being said, there is room for improvement. It would be nice if there was a notification when you upload something that all the dependencies are not on the DLS; and it would be nice if there was indication before you download something that all the dependencies are not on the DLS (or maybe even not on the DLS or on your system).

For the first point, you can set up a filter in CM to check the dependencies - at least in TS12 SP1: show dependencies for an asset, then filter by 'on DLS'.
The second would require a little more work, but maybe the missing dependencies icon could be extended to items not downloaded as well. Items would be so flagged if the dependencies were unknown to CM - that is, not on the DLS and not locally installed.

Not that, for me, this is a big issue. If something is missing assets, I'll make an attempt to locate them, and if not, I'll either do without or delete the item.

IMHO,
Curtis

Oh relax Dave, no one is hijacking your thread...my comments and suggestions are a direct tangential projection of my original comments that your suggested "fix" for the DLS is both ill-advised and unlikely, and offer a solution for end users that does not require any intervention by N3V, that is again, unlikely and ill-advised (as it seems all their "fixes" end up costing more for legacy users, than the benefits provided to TS12 SP1 HF4 users).

Instead of ranting all the time you should start an education thread for Route Builders on " How To Build A Route Properly ". And teach them how to upload it to your DLS along with all the Dep's.
Mick.

My Dear Sir,

You seem to be missing the point of the thread which is to promote discussion of a method to fix
the whole bloody DLS, so no one has to use 15 different ways to try to find a missing KUID,
or use your method on each one that cannot be found.

Dave

My turn......Seems a shame for JR to have a place to "click for KUID List", that returns nothing at all.

Yep cant argue with that at all but write to them and get them to fix it or suggest how they can fix it so it works for you. I'm only there to cause trouble and generally play up and am not high enough up the pecking order to enable the required changes :eek:Next problem ?.
Mick.

Teach people how to build a route properly before it is uploaded so every Dep is on the DLS or easily located and your problem is solved, One of the best in the game was able to do it http://checkrail.com/.
Mick.
Totally agree.

Andy, if you're lurking around here it would be good to see you back on the Forum.

Your talent, knowledge and good humour are very much missed!
