Texture Laying Question

When laying texture in surveyor, I have heard that varying the scale and direction and overlaying the same or similar textures will delete the checkerboard look and create a more realistic feel. When I try to do this all that happens is the new scale replaces NOT mixes with the old one and instead I just get a different sized checkerboard. Any help on this topic is much appreciated.

I find that some textures are hopelessly checkered, while others respond well to rotating. Also, some are more geared toward hillsides as others are for flat areas. Root around, try everything. I usually lay down a default texture, then add other textures like a can of spray paint, up close and with a small radius.

Try the Ultra Textures by McGuirrel. These scale and "swirl" quite well. Older but still gold are the many textures created by David Drake (search for author dmrake in CMP) and the JVC textures are pretty good too.

Getting a good blend and mix that doesn't look either flat/monotone or like a patchwork quilt is really a bit of a dark art. Practice, practice, practice. For best results try and build a palette of similar shades which will blend naturally. You can also experiment overlaying the same texture but at a different size or swirled/non-swirled.
