Terrain painting.

Full of questions lately.

O.K., when painting terrain, I set the radius to minimum. Problem is that big honkin' circle. Not sure what to call it.

I'm using TC 1&2 at the moment. Did they make that circle smaller in later versions? I would like a little more detain control with a smaller "brush". I think its 10 meters now but did they shrink it to 5 in TRS2009? That alone may be worth an upgrade.

Thanks,
Dave.....

Honkin' circle?

Yes, TS09 has 5m terrain and ground texturing. As far as I know TC also has a 5m grid, but not too sure if that affects texturing.

Be wise, wait awhile, see how things go, then get TS2010. Don't make the same mistake I did buying 09 in the belief that the other half of the game will come.

Cheerio,
Nicholas.

Yeah, honkin'.
Fighting a flu bug, Nyquil makes you pretty loopy:eek:

Thanks for the info, 5m terrain painting would be nice. For sure going to wait out on TRS2010 to see how it goes. I have a lot of older content I want to keep so need to see how it handles that first. I was going to buy 2009 earlier but knew the other half was coming so I waited. Actually pretty happy its out as a full stand alone version, not a two part program like originally intended.

Thanks,
Dave.....

The paint brush in surveyor has been a problem in all versions of Trainz, and has been the subject of suggestions and requests since day one.

If you position the circle, and press the LMB, you would expect to fill that circle with the selected texture, but usually, you get a diagonal slash of colour, not completely covering the circle, and extending outside the boundary. It makes it impossible to do any fine brush work.

The bad news is that in TS2009 it's even worse. Although there is a 5m grid, and the smallest brush size fits inside the 10m (yellow) grid, the LMB only lays down texture if the cursor is on the yellow line. You cannot lay texture if the cursor is on an intersection of the darker 5m grid. If the cursor is on a side line of the 10m grid, you get a small splash of colour. If it's on an intersection of the 10m grid, you get a good solid (if diagonal) splash.

It makes it very difficult to put a darker green shade area under a tree when the position of the tree on the grid is critical.

Cheers

Makes one wonder why Auran doesn't take some leaves from RW. The sounds, for instance. And the texturing another of course.

The terrain brush in RS, at least, is not much better. You pretty much have to follow along one of the grid lines to get it to take. Pretty much how Oz described. Then just for fun, if the texture doesn't take right away, when it finally does it will "jump" to another grid.

Same problems either way, but, the smaller brush size helps a bit. You can go along at a good pace for a while then hit a few trouble spots. Can really drive you nuts sometimes, and thats a short trip for me.

At least adjusting the brush size is easier in Trainz. A little spin of the wheel compared to having to type the size in.

Ah well. We can't have the best of both worlds in everything. Over time and much route building you'll start to just let these itty bits slide. That's when you begin enjoying Trainz.

I think you'll find this only applies in 09/10 when using the 5m brush on a 10m grid. Convert the baseboard to 5m grid, and you can texture quite accurately in my experience.

Slightly off topic, but is texture blending not as controllable/delicate in TS2010, or is it just me?

Ah yes Anthony, forgot about the grid size part. The first few boards of my route were built on 10m grids and I was there wondering,
"Strange! Is it me or does the new 5m grid look exactly the same as 06?"

On the feather part, I just touch the button. Think of it as.. terrain anti-aliasing. :D

Not from what I've seen. I'm using the 5m grid and the smallest paint brush size (5m ?)

Below is a sample of holding down the LMB and moving the brush diagonally.

Try as you might, you will not fill in those gaps with the same texture, unless you use a bigger brush.

Cheers
