ok so I was playing the 2004 demo and i was going 60 mph and suddenly the signel changed from green to red I jamed on the brakes but i was too late. Is there a way to do an emergency stop? Oh also I am thinking of geting Trainz 2010 so would like to know does the new one have any steam trains in it ? and is it easy to make mods in the game or not (just wondering).

Sorry, but when it comes to stopping at 60mph, you have to be thinking at least five minutes ahead of where you are - because that's about how long it's going to take.

In 'DCC' mode hit 'S' then 'A' and it will almost stand on it's nose. If the AI is driving it is gonna take a long time to stop with any weight at all behind the locos...

As Dermmy says, in DCC mode that's it. In the Cab control mode, hit S,Z,A, and Pause Break [top RH of the key board]. If you are really into steam you would also press V for sand!! In a diesel loco, after hitting the Pause button hit C [dynamic brake] and hold down the W to increase engine speed to enable Max power for the dynamic brakes.
I started Trainz with the purchase of Trains 2010 early this year and have just purchased and installed 2006 in the Trainz collection package as I wanted to get the 328 page manual as I found that the manual for 2010 assumes prior knowledge. You need a reasonable computer to run 2010 but is far superior to 2006. unfortunately there are only about 10 steam engines in it so I also purchased Murchison 2009 to add to it where there are lot more. As a beginner I have ben able to do edits [mods] to a number of routes and even have the a couple of UP Big boys double heading on the Avery-Drexel Route. As you like steam, try it. I am able to drive each engine independently i.e. set regulator, cut off, maintain water etc. I have put 2006 on, and althought many of the routes are the same its not a patch on 2010, and if you add Murchison 2009 and Settle and Carlisle will get more steam engines. Cheers

suddenly the signel changed from green to red
In all honesty this sounds odd... On a real railway a signal would never change straight from green to red, unless it was a 2 aspect, in which case you'd most likely have some sort of warning beforehand...

Doogerie has indicated a particular interest in steam trains. If that is the case then the signal in question may well have been a semaphore which will readily move from green aspect to red

Agreed, but the same applies to multiplle aspect colour lights, usually in the case of an emergency. Still can't stop a real train in a short distance though!!

As they used to say in my day, A train is not like a wheel barrow i.e Just cant drop the handles and it stops
Cheers
