Steepest railroad grade?

Hmmm, when he said "railroad" I assumed he meant other than cog railways and San Francisco cable cars. Anyone know what the steepest coal mine shaft railway is?

Can't find one now because of all the minecraft spam on youtube, but I've seen videos of the guys riding these things sitting at a steep angle.

Ex underground miner

No rail in the mine I was in but plenty of others were around near where I worked.
It really is a bit rich though to chip people for being off topic when the topic was not specifically against what was being talked about in an interesting discussion.
The OP said steepest Railroad grade.
SHEESH!!!

Am I gonna need to make some popcorn?

There are rod steam engines and there are diesels, and then there are the cog trains in Europe and elsewhere. The cog trains can pull steep grades. There is also the steam gear engine like some Shays which can pull very steep grades, but not like the cogs. The gear steamers are really slow though, as are the cogs when they are in cog mode.

Cheers

The steepest grades I've personally heard of for adhesion railroads is 18% on logging railroads with shay type locos being the primary power.

This was for Underground mines not sure if it's still the same.been out of the pits for 12yrs now

"No section of track work to be used by a locomotive
under its own power and relying on adhesion between the
wheels and track work is to have an average gradient
exceeding 1:15 over any length of 50 metres"

one of my coworkers said that when he was working on the arr there was a grade of 6% up to a coal mine. it took 3 locos to drag the train up but 5 to come down. they didnt want trouble on the grade. -inprr
