Realisticly, norm is right.

the UP ordered the 4000 big boys to solve that exact problem-- it really costly to run a challenger and an FEF together, but the big boys could pull the whole damn train, with just one crew.

however I have heard of double heading big boys during the Second World War for some really long trains.

As far as I know the UP never doubleheaded Challengers and FEF's. The two locomotives where designed for two different roles on the railroad. The Challengers to be fast, powerful freight haulers and the FEFs to replace the older MT series Mountains on passenger trains. The FEF's where less efficient at the Challengers freight speed of 30-40mph and burned more fuel. They where much more suited to 50-60mph fast freights across the plains than over the mountainous lines. On passenger service, the UP did doublehead Challengers and FEF's, though. I've only seen FEF-1s doing it however it is likely the other FEF series did it as well.

Sidenote: UP 3985 and 844 have doubleheaded in the past, however not on freight so it is entirely possible to doublehead a Challenger and FEF.

Big Boys definitely did solve the multiple locomotive problem however even the biggest and best was not enough for the UP. Increase in traffic during WWII and into the post-war 1950's economic boom meant that the amount of freight needed to be moved was greater than one single locomotive could pull, even a 6,000+ HP 4000 class. Big Boy + Big Boy or Challenger + Big Boy doubleheading where rare sights however necessary. Some stories state that 2 Big Boys would lead a train with a 3rd pushing from the rear, however I don't know if this is true or not as a 4000 being used as a banker seems a waste of power. Oddly enough I don't think I've ever seen a Challenger + Challenger doubleheader, hmm...

Challengers were used in double heading a lot. Somewhere I have seen video of a big boy pusher. That said, the challengers were used as pushers much more often.
 
It could be like on the SP where they felt that having two cab forwards doubleheading the train could cause the couplers to be pulled out of the front cars.
