Steam sale

Careful, Bob. You just admitted that you bought a game of which we do not speak. Now you'll be cast into outer darkness.

No, as a matter of fact, before I purchased TS12 from Auran, I did a couple of weeks of research on Train sims, having come from over 20 years experience with Flight sims. Tried the other two simulators on other computers, and was totally disappointed. Once I tried TS12 on a friends computer, I was hooked. He warned me right off the bat not to get it from Steam but to get it from Auran, and in addition, I had read on some flight sim forums about problems with Steam, so I just decided to avoid it. Not worth saving a couple of dollars, to have some 3rd party screwing around with my computer. Best decision I made.

I need to point out a potential problem. You mention that Steam has an offline mode - this is true, but it is not foolproof, and you do have to connect to the Steam network once every few weeks or so as a result.

Hmm, that's possible - I really don't know. I'm online 99% of the time. I just wanted to point out that I've never NOT been able to play a Steam game because my Internet (or Steam itself) was down, which I know a lot of people still think is the case.

Having said that, I'd agree 100% that anyone without a fast, stable connection to the Internet should think twice about Steam... it's not meant for them.

Agree fully there, as the Steam service normally sends information back and forth whilst in online mode, and updates can be large at times.

The same people that buy a $379 laptop, or a $89 tablet on sale, at a Big Box Store, on Black Friday, and waited in line, out in the cold, for 36 hours, just in order to save a couple of bucks.

LOL... yeah, but I didn't stand in line in the cold - I pressed a button on my Steam homepage. Total elapsed time from purchase to playing: less than 90 minutes. Total $ spent (includuding Murchison 2): $15. Yey! :)

Neither did I: it took me I think about 20 minutes to buy and fully download TS2009 and that cost $3.75. I think TS12 was selling for around $11 during the same sale. Point is, buying from SimCentral is just as convenient, and also just as cheap when on sale.

Moderators, please lock this thread. I opened it as a small attempt to let anyone interested know about the Steam sale. It's degenerated into a bunch of people calling other people idiots because they disagree with them.

Anyway, the sale's over.

To answer your original question, just go to Planet Auran and register another copy of TS12 using the Steam copy's serial number. You can find the number by right clicking on TS12 in Steam and choosing View CD key. It will show you have two versions of TS12 and you get some vouchers.

I bought all kinds of goodies from NV3 a couple of months ago. 2 boxed TS12s for about 25 total, and a few more items at dirt prices. I hate steam, I bought the discs and waited a short time for them to make it half way around the world. I think the wife's Call of Duty games use steam, even when you buy the discs. I just don't like steam.

Cheers....Rick

Thanks was waiting just ordered 2010 but for $10 why not still going to get boxed. Again Thank You

Well, I do have a laptop and no, I don't have 300 games. I much prefer loading the games manually and my gaming confuser never sees the internet. I did a lot of traveling before retiring. Every time I got to England, or anywhere else, the last thing on my mind was sitting in a room playing a video game.*
Like I said, if you enjoy the Steam thing, go for it. I prefer not to. Been there, done that with the girl friend, never again.

oh yeah definately. geting steam to simply buy one game really is stupid, thats why i hate origin, just have that to play one game, completely pointless, but to say steam is awfull as a whole without looking at the bigger picture is a bit silly

Murchison 2 on Steam

I finally go Murchison 2. Wanted for a long time.

I prefer boxed games, but I've never seen the stand-alone packs so cheap. (75% off)

Sure, Steam is awful as a whole. I've avoided buying other products, including "that other railsim" solely because of Steam. If I'm essentially going to voluntarily allow my system to be trojaned, I may as well get stuff off a torrent. Not that I'm advocating that; just saying that Steam is potentially as risky, if not moreso.

BTW, if you don't think Steam is effectively a trojan, it is. Most DRM is. Several years ago, Amazon was discovered to have remotely deleted customer's purchases off their Amazon Kindles. Very likely Steam's DRM has that capability, whether or not Steam acknowledges it at present. Amazon sure didn't till after they started using it.

Regardless, Steam can effectively accomplish the same thing by simply preventing activation of one's paid-for product (at least for some things sold through Steam, not necessarily Trainz.) Better not to have to deal with that at all.

I never said anyone should or shouldn't use Steam. Every one of my posts state that if you like it, go for it. I also addressed someone talking about third party resellers, of which Steam is one of them. AS far as Steam being awful, it is, for me. Stated that as well. That quip about going anywhere and downloading your game to play was a big defense of Steam when that other sim switched to it.*
Are you that defensive of your choice to use it you can't see when someone is agreeing with your choice even though they think the idea of Steam is silly to them?

Amazon just did that recently, and deleted all the Ebooks book from a customers device because there was some mixup in the credit card payment.
