Speed Limit Issue

I find that in most of my routes, regardless of how long they are, the speed limit is always 40 MPH. This is particularly problematic when running trains automatically as they will not exceed the speed limit.

Is there any way I can alter the default speed limits of the tracks?

Yes put a speed sign on it.

There are many available, including invisible ones and metric and imperial.

You have to put them for each direction, also they don't take affect unless a train passes it. So if you put a sign and points A and C, and the train starts at B, it will still have the default 40 until it gets to one of the other points. I normally put an invisible sign in front of every train or section of track where trains start from.

In surveyor -> Click Tracks -> Track side mode -> Search for speed.

You also should pay attention to signalling as the AI will run as if they are under yellows unless you have placed at least three signals.

Thanks for the tips folks. I'd always assumed the speed limit signs were just decorative rather than having an actual effect on the speed limit of the line - of course it does make sense that train drivers would obey them even in a simulation!
