So how is SP4 bugwise?

SRKing783

''Trainz Veteran''
Haven't used Trainz in a while but looking to get back into it, still on SP2 and while I don't think there were any other bugs in it for me besides the Properties window taking a few seconds to load up or refresh every time I made an edit or did something in it (not a big bug though) it's still really annoying that that happens. Does SP4 fix that or no, and are there any major bugs in it?

Alternatively, how buggy is TRS19 SP5? Because unless I can start SP1 on a new install that might be my only option if SP4 is buggy. On a Mac too if that helps with identifying any bugs (I'd imagine bugs on Windows would be on macOS though).

Well,

SP3 Broke a lot of things making driving and editing a totally frustrating crap-show.

SP4 fixes a bunch of issues:

The dorky AI issue so they no longer run backwards randomly and ignore direction markers because they acted like a bunch of partiers out on a wild Friday night.

They fixed the issue with TRC crossings not saving settings. You also need to download updated TRC components though.

They fixed the Bulk Update utility so that you can now use the selected area option. Prior to that, it would select everything even if you selected a baseboard.

There are other underlying fixes I can't remember and I recommend reading through the release notes.

If you are using PE or Plus, disable Trainz Living Railway right now. It can cause pauses and other performance issues.

I found downloading the already updated version from My Trainz to be a much easier and reliable update even though I went through the regular update process with my beta version. Uninstall the previous version and install the new one you downloaded. The previous settings are kept including your data file location and nothing is missed.

Be sure to open a Show Logs window after the install to watch the DBR. Mine didn't show the progress bar for some reason.

When you say SP5, are you talking about TRS19? Just asking to clarify.

So it seems TRS22 SP4 sucks even more than TRS22 SP2 from what I'm reading and TRS19 SP5 is totally usable? If that's the case I might just go to TRS19 if I can't backtrack to TRS22 SP1...

I meant SP4 TRS22. It was SP3 that sucked. I'll update my post. Doh. I edited my post accordingly.

Once you've gone forward, you can't go back without a backup due to data file changes.

I have seen an improvement in AI performance with 2022PE Sp4. AI drivers seem to make less goofy choices such as running backwards. I have an idea that copying from a schedule library is now working where in Sp3 I would get crashes-to-desktop. (But it is still early on the schedule library thing.)

So it looks like SP4 is fine. Does it fix the thing with the Properties window or no? Like when you click a button in it does it instantly refresh or does it need a second or two to update?

And in terms of going back I've seriously been considering starting fresh on a new install so that wouldb't affect me much.

As for AI, good to hear that it's getting better

The properties windows seem fine. They are different now with more options. You need to click edit properties, or something like that, to change any values and you can change things you couldn't before while in Driver.

Yeah, the AI are awesome now. I drove my Gloucester Terminal Electric route for many hours again the other night without any goofy moves. I gave up when I wanted to and not out of frustration with the AI.

The Schedule Library works fine in SP4. It definitely was a bit "off" in SP3 with "off" being an understatement.

All the bugs in TRS22PE SP3 that I encountered (and reported) have been fixed in TRS22PE SP4. I have encountered (and reported) one minor new bug in SP4 caused by the splitting off of the new Filter Palette from the old Assets Palette, but there are several easy workarounds available.

No new software release or update is ever without "bugs" - the recent Crowdstrike Falcon "update" will become a classic textbook example of that.

From my experience at least (and I have not explored every single detail of SP4) it is a significant improvement over SP3 and has far fewer issues.

There is another outlier that I reported and they squashed after the fact that we will see the results from in the next version.

Try moving catenary splines with spline points in close proximity to tracks located below in Classic Surveyor. This generates a $string_$ type command instead of an actual error message. (I can't recall the actual error at the moment). Anyway, I got an email from the QA Team telling me it was a pain in the butt to track it down but they nailed it. My answer was but of course, I'm known to find the weird ones in so many fewer words.

I can tell you, if you use clutter effects on your routes... well they're gone if you go over 200m...
Me personally after the fun with TANE updates and TRS19 updates I just don't update right away (if I ever). so far because Trainz Plus SP1 has been extremely stable there has never been a reason for me to upgrade beyond SP1.

Cheers

So if the Properties bug has been fixed and SP4 is stable enough, then it looks like I'll be updating. Probably will do a temp install first to make sure everything's good on my end, but...yea.

Have to agree with you hiawathamr about SP1, I never had an issue with that version. Really wish I saved an installer of that version, that would've come in really helpful...

Really, its been the best decision I've ever made really. The beta version of TRS22 (again Trainz Plus) has been extremely stable and so has the original version but SP1 was my cut off point for now as again, I don't want to go into major issues like how some updates have been in TANE and TRS19.

Best rule is to save the complete offline installers of the specific versions you want to roll back to should you ever decide. That's what I've been doing since like forever since TANE.

Cheers

OK, so I tried updating to both SP1 and SP4 via two separate installers (posted about the former already in another thread, apologies for any spam). To SP1 I used the TRS22 Beta app I had from a backup of an old computer, and SP4 the installer from MyTrainz. The former only got up to Early Access before it threw up an error (it said that it was reading a file in the Resources part of the app and trying to find a string of code or text I believe, the code it was trying to find wasn't there and it found something else, thus the patch didn't work). So unfortunately SP1 is completely out of the question as I don't have an SP1 installer.

Updating to SP4 on the other hand...yea it worked fine. Testing it on the new install the Properties window instantly refreshes (w0w such features!!!) so that bug was indeed fixed, so I'll probably just go ahead and update to that. Now to decide whether to start fresh on a new database or keep this current one...

I was delighted the consists did not create static queues anymore but now do the opposite and crash into each other, I'll introduce slower speed limits to try to cure it but I do feel I am wasting my time and need to start a fresh project.
I will still have a good working route in TRS19 without the bells and whistles of TRS22.
Edit: On second thoughts trains will drive through each other so derailments it is.
EDBR first call.
