You're both very welcome. I was a bit surprised when I checked what was on sale this week. I have both Steam versions and N3V retail versions installed side by side without any issues.

Sometimes the both have sales at the same time but it is rare. Most often N3V offer better over all deals and DLC bought from N3V works in both versions.

I bought TS12 just so I could replace pofig and other trees in older routes, but buying through Amazon is just buying from Steam, so I now have a Steam account that has to log in every time I use it. Otherwise, I would not care for Steam at all, although I know some folks like it a lot.

Does that mean that if you bought TRAINZ or T:ANE from Steam that you'd have to log in with Steam every time you want to use TRAINZ ?

When I bought TS12 through Amazon -- perhaps four years ago -- there wasn't any indication that Steam was involved. I don't have a Steam account. (And don't want one.)

I don't particularly like Steam and when it comes to most computer games I'd much rather buy from GOG (And I don't regard Trainz as being a computer game by the way, - it's a railway simulator), but it could sometimes be useful to have Trainz installs that aren't linked to N3V's servers. As well as that having a seperate cut to the bone no-DLC install around is useful to check that routes are completely DLS friendly before uploading them.

If a copy of Trainz being sold outside of the Steam website doesn't have a Steam key it isn't a Steam version of Trainz. I don't know what deal Amazon has made concerning Trainz, but it wasn't done with Steam. With their labour practices and the way they treat their workers I refuse to buy anything from Amazon.

I mostly use TS2012 these days for 3.5 build asset creation and for getting older, but still good layouts ready for taking through into the later versions of Trainz. I know some Trainz folk don't like TS2012 SpeedTrees, but I did and I found the next version replacements for them to be largely disappointing. Pofig trees were really good as well and are sorely missed; - and yes I do know about the small handful of 64 bit survivors.

Like other's here, I avoid Amazon too because of their business practices and other reasons .

I'm not quite sure why logging in is a problem. TRS19, TRS22 and Trainz Plus all require you to log in with every use to determine what features and DLC packages are active based upon your user name. I've used Steam for a long time and never had a problem with the Steam Client or with Valve's store policies. I like the fact that my games and software are always up to date and I don't have to worry about visiting websites to download patches. And the weekly sales are a great way to save money.

No you don't. There is an option to go Offline. This allows you to play games when you have limited or no internet connection. Have used it many times.
