Following the success of the USRA Light 2-8-2 Mikado, the Railroad turned to one of the big 3 steam builders for a unique looking engine for both mainline and switching jobs while retaining its Southern dress, so, what came out fresh out of the engine erecting shop, is a USRA 0-6-0 with a cap stack and center mounted headlight, and a combined footboard and road cowcatcher, and the booming 3-chime steam whistle and smokebox mounted bell, it may look a little odd to some, but at the end of the day, nothing is stopping these powerful steam engines from getting the job done.
Well, a little out of my comfort zone, perhaps, but I've been watching several YT vids of heritage railroads using their 80-100 year old steam engines to handle modern revenue freight and actually make a buck or two...
Seemed like fun, so I've added a tiny branch to my museum route as a "proof of concept". and have found it quite enjoyable. Maybe someday we can get a real route-builder to try it. Doesn't have to be huge, just a couple of miles would be fine, most likely.
Best,
