service packs

Program Files (x86) is for 32-bit applications, Program Files is (meant) for 64-bit applications. Trainz is a 32-bit application so should be installed in Program Files (x86) - problems may result otherwise.

Ok, I just installed the game as administrator with my anti virus and firewall off. I put it in a program files (x86) folder and the game ran fine so I turned my a\v and firewall back on and tried to get sp1 and the same thing happened again. It get about halfway through the patching process and a message comes up that trainzutil.exe has stopped working and windows will close the program and search for a solution. I minimized the message screen instead of closing it but it stops the patch process anyway. The only thing I can think of is that there`s something wrong like a virus or something so I`m gonna get my computer cleaned out and checked but that won`t be for a month since I`m going out of town to work for a month. After I get that done I`ll try again. It`s not just trainz that I have a problem with it stop working ,it`s happened a few times with other stuff too, that`s why I think it`s the computer and not the game.

On a side note though, I do wonder whether trainzutil needs to be set to run as administrator as well. (It's in the bin folder)

Thats the one thing I forgot to do this time , I didn`t go into the bin folder and run the application files as administrator. I`ll try it one more time right now and let you know.
 
If it does decide to work... then it may be worth running other programs that decide to stop working as administrator - I know that due to tightened security in Vista/7, any program that writes to it's own folder (in Program Files/Program Files(x86) needs to be run as administrator to get sufficient permissions to run correctly (a standard user account (even one marked administrator) does not have sufficient rights to be able to write to certain folders - that's why the 'run as administrator' option is there (even on admin accounts).

I got the patch for sp1 to install, went into content manager so it would repair the data base but when I go to start the game it says there`s an error in the soundcore_7 file in the bin folder. I`ve gotten that message a few time during this process and everytime it`s a different file. I don`t know if it will help to auto download the other service packs? I meant to mention before that when I go to install the game after it asks what folder to put it in it asks where to put the shortcut and theres a box to click on if you don`t want to create a shortcut. Should I maybe click this box and then create the shortcut later from the programs list? Another thing I did different this time was to make sure that I had nothing else open when doing the patch, I don`t know if that makes a difference or not.
 
It does not make a lot of difference when the shortcut(s) are created, but it may be worth upgrading to SP3 (If the option is available, use the Patch Trainz button, if not you may need to get the manual patching program) - make sure Trainz files are set to run as administrator (trainz.exe in the main folder, and all program files (.exe files) in the Bin folder)

If it still does not work, the problem would seem to be your system and I would still advise to get it checked out.

ok, I`ve got sp1 installed. I had directx 9 from august 2009 and when I went to do the auto update it said that I had to have directx 9 aug 2009, which I had , so I went and downloaded directx9 feb 2010 and it says the same thing. Does directx9 need to be installed in a certain folder. Right now it`s just in a folder thats in the folder with my name on it.I`m thinking since I already have it that the problem is just where I have it and maybe trainz looks for it in a certain spot not just anywhere.

That doesn't sound like you've installed it, that sounds like you downloaded it and didn't execute it. DirectX installs files to lots of places on the system. there is no single file that is 'DirectX' once it's installed.
 
That helps, didn`t know I had to execute it. I should have known that something from microsoft wouldn`t be that simple. So the patch file is downloading now.
 
I should have made it clearer - when using the non-websetup version, you need to run a file called dxsetup (I see you managed to find it after a while) - the reason for that is that the non-websetup version is designed for developers rather than end-users, but it still works the same.

The patch to 40040 failed. It says theres an error in some dat.text file, so I went into content manager and repaired the data base and now I can`t find the auto update thing because to get into cmp I had to say no when it asked about the auto update.
 
The auto-update option is the Trainz Options box (Click Options on the launcher to check this)

Did it say which .dat file was affected?

It did but I forget what one, it was a data. text file. When I try to start the game it says theres an error in the render2Dcore_7c.dll in the bin folder. I found the auto update and I`m gonna try it again.
 
OK - If the error relating to the data.txt (or similar) appears again, make a note of it - the problem sounds like a fault with one of the game files (or a driver issue)

It says existing file is damaged and cannot be patched: c:\program files (x86)\ts2009\bin\TETdata\container.txt

This may solve the current patch problem, but it may require a re-install of Trainz if the error persists.

On the DVD disc there is a data2.cab file. Inside there is the original container.txt file (the folder structure in the .cab file is the same as it is on your hard drive) - you will need to copy the file to replace the affected one.

If I re install the game won`t I have to re apply the patch. I put in the disk and there`s no way for me to pick out that file.
 
Unfortunately, yes, but I have a feeling that the first failed patch somehow mucked up one of the Trainz files so it is a good idea to do so.
