Sad News - Jack McLean has passed away

Dinsdale???!!!
Folks,
Jack McLean passed away peacefully in Melbourne last Wednesday 23/06/10.

Jack was a noted railway writer and an expert on railway signalling/safeworking. He had written hundreds of articles for many Australian and UK magazines & provided advice to many other authors, both from a prototype and model railway perspective. He also co-authored "Cross Country" with Norm Houghton about the Victorian Railways Ballarat-Skipton/Newtown-Cressy-Colac branchline.

He flew with the RAAF in Canada and the UK during WW2 and travelled across both by rail - these experiences he later wrote about in detail. He even got to travel the entire Isle of Wight system in one day shortly after VE day.

I am grateful for Jack's enthusiasm in documenting the Australian railway system from the 1930's onward. He was also an avid timetable collector and his writings in the ARHS Bulletin, Newsrail and countless other publications will continue to assist railfans in their own research for years to come.

Indeed, I still remember the first of Jack's articles I ever read back in the 1980s: a Newsrail article describing the working of special passenger trains on the VR Terang-Mortlake line for the New Year's Race meeting. It was the first of many articles from Jack that give insight into the earlier railway era we 'young ones' just didn't get to experience for ourselves.

Many thanks for all those decades of sharing your experiences and knowledge with us.

Rest in peace Jack.

Kind Regards,
Frank Strik
