I see some nice animated turnouts ... something that should be added to Trainz 2013, as well as getting rid of the big, clumsy, toylike, red/green arrows, and the obtrusive confounded blinding yellow compass.

... Career Systems and achievements...

I'd like a PC Railway Simulator run by adults, for, adults, if anyone's thinking of setting up one can count me in.

Sorry to disagree, but career systems and achievements CAN be an adult simulation mechanic, as many of us who fly for VAs in flight sim could attest. There is a huge gulf in enjoyment between totally-unmetered 'fly without any goals' and flying for a VA that demands good landings, on-time service, explanation for delays, a progression in ranks from flying time, and achievements for completing tour missions.

Could I go back to plain FS without any goals or career? No, I couldn't. Even FSpassengers and/or FScaptain to provide basic goals and career features are a necessity these days, but they barely even compare to a real VA in terms of making you try to fly your best.

Oddly, I find myself puzzled by this thread, as I've tried the RW3 update, and found it to be the RW update I've been most impressed with, I have no technical problems, frame rates are improved, they've implemented notched brakes properly, sway, lighting and weather improvements improve immersion for me, sounds have improved (except that the deltics are near inaudible outside of the cab now), the updated locomotives are a welcome addition, and the distant mountains provide a more pleasing view. Yet oddly, despite me being unimpressed by RW>RW2 and all the mini-updates in RW2, and watching people say I was wrong and that they were great updates, I'm seeing the exact opposite, I *LIKE* RW3, everyone else seems to be disappointed/displeased by it.

That said, I still can't afford to make it my primary trainsim.

Animated turnouts have been in Trainz since 2006, its just none of the route builders bothered to use them prior to trainz 12 (hint: most of the TS12 routes use animated turnouts). They're generally speaking more accurate looking/acting than RW's, since the 'auto-gen' feature often gets frogs completely wrong on anything but the most simple of turnouts (double-slip crossings tend to look bizarre and scary in RW)

Still looking for that
... obtrusive confounded blinding yellow compass.
I can barely see it in Surveyor

Where?

Since I've been using 12 more often in Surveyor mode, I also find I don't have a complaint regarding the compass.

As far as RW is concerned, I do heartily recommend everyone purchase it and devote the time they use now on these forums to playing and enjoying it! Nothing would please me more, and I would guess that those who love RW would discover it a better use of their time as well!;)

How come in screenshots and videos of Trainz, I have seen very few if any with animated turnouts ?

And the AJS animated turnouts are from 2006 (5+ years old), and Ocemy turnouts, I have seen very few screenshots of, and videos of them ... none at all. If they are so darn good looking ... then why does no one use them, and show them off ?

I hear that the TS12 compass is visible in Driver, (why I can't fathom the reason why), I guess so Boy Scouts can find their way "Driving" in the woods ?

I ponder what improvements TS13 will have to show ? Possibly "Speed Dirt" ?
And if you purposely set your POV view so as to purposely prove me wrong ... sure ... you are not going to see the compass, red/green arrows, and non-animated turnouts !

If it was anyone else than me, pointing out the years old flaws in Trainz, and the amount of non-improvements ... you all would be shouting: "Hear Hear ... I agree".

So what, if Trainz really never improves the compass, red/green arrows, and non-animated turnouts ... Trainz will fall by the wayside. No skin off my nose !

Other companies are desperately trying to make improvements in realizim ...

Opinions vary, but to my tastes the absolute worst Railworks slip switch with blocked flangeways and welded points looks better than the best Trainz fixed switch. Reasons fixed switches aren't used in Trainz routes more often;

1. Tedious, tedious, tedious, finicky fiddlefaddling to set one up. You could practically make a career out of setting up a dozen switches.

2. Too many polygons. Three or four fixed switches won't hurt, get a big yard with a few dozen and it halves the framerates.

3. They look like crud, all the time and effort you put into them just isn't worth the slight improvement.

There's a whole thread on that in the suggestion boxcar, what's needed quick and dirty is something that will add a frog and some checkrails along with the switch lever to the splined switches automatically - not that great, but better than what we have now.

It only appears in freeroaming mode and then only while moving. Once you stop it disappears. Don't know why you have such disdain for navigation aids. The compass tells you exactly where the aiming point is and what direction you are facing. Perhaps if you have memorized the location of every rock and bush you can tell exactly where you are in your route just by looking at it. I on the other hand don't think it beneath me to use any help that is available. I also use a compass and map when walking in the woods and a GPS when driving.

The point was that the red / green arrows only appear if you want them. Turn them off you you don't like them.

Even when turning off the Red/Green turnout arrows, in certain positions close to a turnout, the Red/Green turnout arrows are impossible to turn off.

And why on Earth would you need a compass navigation aid in "Driver" ... that's just plain silly !

The MiniMap tells you where you are !

If Trainz really was realistic, a built in trackside signal (a highly believable looking realistic one) should be at the switch points, displaying the switch position ... and no dumb looking Red/Green arrows.

Can't speak for others but I'm too lazy to apply them. If I was making one masterpiece route with all the bells and whistles, realistic turnouts would be used but most if not all of the ones I've made to date are just good-enough, i.e. they work. Could they be better looking, sure, but for me the return on time invested is not there.

In the screenshots forum I see some of the master builders making stunningly beautiful routes but I'm not there, yet.

How about this for the MRSA of RW3 bugs.

Going well in Scenario No 4 of HC. Even got 40 - 50 FPS after turning AA up (water down to medium) except when other trains in the scene (dropped to 25).
Anyhow climbing steadily to Allegenhy Tunnel and I noticed a light engine 8576 on the track in front of me. Signals however are still showing clear, no SPAD warning (this was also checked in the after event summary). However 8576 is the loco you couple to the rear of the train at the start of the activity and supposedly drive as a banker, until an event puts you in the front loco. As I was catching up to the loco (still on clear signals) I backed off the throttle a bit, only a few seconds later to experience a huge lurch and derailment. Well, not surprising I guess, given the loco 500 metres behind had uncoupled itself and leapfrogged over the entire train...!

I wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry but this has got to be one of the worst bugs I've ever seen in any train sim in over 10 years.

I would think that predescribed sessions would be a problem ... I would want to create my own session, and just run the trains the way I wanted to.

If the helper is way up past MG Tower, almost to Allegheny Tunnel, that is not where they would add on helpers on the prototype, as that is just a short distance from the summit at Gallitzin.

Helpers are added at Rose to Alto for WB's ... and Johnstown to Cresson for EB's.

I have seen some pretty funny Railworks derailments !

Good gracious Ed, have you been converted.........:hehe:

I still haven't seen any Paraffin, Oil, or, Battery tail lamps on the ends of ANY train consists on You Tube and various new screeenshots yet, for any British, or, American trains, have RW still defied our requests to have the basics implemented into the game.....

Cheerz, ex.
