Russian download sites

Hi all,

Trying to find some 3rd party assets (The ones that show as a black question mark on a grey box in the Asset Dependencies list)

When I google some of the kuids I get lots of Russian sites.

Maybe my thinking is stuck in the Cold War but I'm a little suspicious. Are these sites legit or just another way of delivering malicious software?

Use an Ad-Blocker like AdBlockPlus on Firefox with an Easylist subscription and NO exceptions for "good ads" which the newest ABP allows through by default; I suspect they're getting paid off to allow certain ads. I've been to tons of these Russian sites and not gotten a bug, though disabling Flash and Java (and Java really shouldn't be enabled in a browser anyway) it a good strategy.

Sometimes there can come ads, with malware sometimes but it should be removed when you clear your internet cache and so on. It's very important to use adblock and no script with firefox (in Russia we use these because of the horrible advertising on russian sites).

The sites you get when you google are probably threads where the user ask for kuids, and the admin upload it to them. Could you send me the names of the sites you have been to?

RRSignal,

I already have noscript and have Java and Flash disabled. Will check out AdBlockPlus as I do still get ads native to the primary site.

Korikova,
I'm not even going to try and imagine the ads you're talking about!
And yes, most links were threads to 'help me' lists. I think I now know 'Unknown Location' in about a dozen languages!

Good news is I found two of the three assets I was looking for and the third I substituted with an available version on DLS using Content Creator Plus, so I learned something new there as well!

Thanks both of you for your help!

Well, as Anna has demonstrated in the past, the Russians make some of the best content available. Hope she learns to make some herself.

I actually did a Sofia metro route for OpenBve, but I did abandon the project because it was so difficult to only have notepad as a route editor. In Trainz there is a graphical editor so I'm currently learning the 3d programs to develope a route from Berlin to Warsaw, and Moscow to Minsk, huge projects and a smaller commuter route in Spain, Malaga-Fuengirola and of course, some routes of the Moscow metro. But hopefully it's worth it :)

I have downloaded a huge amount of Russian content and have found exactly zero problems with the sites. I recommend either Chrome or IE with Google Toolbar as either will translate entire pages. All the download sites are linked to forums and wherever there was doubt about what was what I found them universally warm and helpful despite posting in English. In fact DON'T try and do the 'right' thing and post in Russian via Google Translator, it is almost always woefully inexact.

Oh -and one more thing - most of the content is superb.....

Andy ;)
