RSDL Announce: Rail Simulator 2: Railworks – The evolution of Rail Simulator

The new version is afaik the first version + SP1 +3 new routes; thats ok if you dont have the first version ( i have only tried out the demo ).
The graphics are ok for me , but what i miss are the interactive industries.
Passengers are half implemented ( no real loading or unloading , just eye-candy ) but freight ???
Then about running smooth : even the demo stutters at some places ( on a modern pc , and not to high resolution )
The physics act strange : coupling , even at very slow speed, can be difficult . When you uncouple a wagon on a slope , it doesnt roll away ; it just stand stil ( brakes not applied ) ....

i have the first Rail Simulator, even though this is a Trainz forum, it is alright.
but in my own opinion, trainz is more of my type (like many other people here)
theres is more locos and different options for trainz.
anyway thats just my opinion.

cheers,
burntruss

In addition, for those of you who are online, we also plan to make use of Valve’s ‘Steam’ technology to simplify the process of supporting and upgrading the product.

I has Rail Simulator,
I have not so much fun with it over hours as with Trainz.
And modells for my railroad? With Auran I have the big DLS, I never found so much for free (First-Class-Tiket is for me OK) with a other Railroad-Game.
And I'm a trainsim user since the year 2000.
My Trainz-History (MSTS, KRS, EEP I has it all):
I buy the first Retail of Trainz over Import-Shop - we have not a "free roaming camera"
UTC online with my fathers credit card - must pay again for German "Zoll"
TRS2004 over a friend in Austria
TRS2007 here in Germany over Amazon.de
TS2009 via Digital Download and Pay with PayPal. Thats the best to buy Trainz for me.
And I will buy TS....X and Y and Z and so on. Trainz is for me the best of all train-sims.

And when I read steam, I only hope that Auran never use this.
I buy every version of Trainz for money and not download it.
Steam is only "DRM" for me.

I changed my System from Windows to Ubuntu-Linux because the "Activation". I don't want to answer the question "why i activate again".
And YES TS 2009 runs under Ubuntu 8.10 with WINE. You only need the graficcard driver - Ubuntu helps :D
For problems one view unter www.winehq.org and search for Trainz.
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=1468

And what is when RSDL not want that I "activate" my new KRS over the Internet? They can stop this... and I can not again use my game again.
I read the news over steam and EA-Games and the posts on Amazon.com to the game I would say the name was "spore".

Months ago I wrote news about Rail Simulator development.
Now I say the same as the German users in this forum:
"This is a TRAINZ-Forum - not a Rail Simulator Forum".

I am using at this moment the Download Manager
Current Speed : 4.04 Kbps.....
Great job....
I live in Belgium (Europe).

That's fair - Auran must pay the traffic.
When you want more you can buy a first class ticket in Auran online store.
I have no credit card, I pay with PayPal. That's easy.

Just fabulous news isn't it?

Now that MSTS2 is shelved,,,,RS is now even more clearly the best sim we got and is only going to get better with RS2 and their plans as the best trainsim on the market currently

hats off RSDL, were with you all the way!

:udrool:

I for one am glad that RS2 is coming out, it will prevent Auran from getting too complacent, and give them the incentive to get TRS09 up and running. they maybe not as good as Trainz now but they seem to be intent on catching them up!;)

It was fairly obvious that a new version of RS was in the wind sometime soon when it became available on the net for $10Aus a couple of months ago. RS is a good sim the problem is that to build a route with any sort of individual flavour, there just isn't enough variety of buildings , trees etc. I was thinking of making a DEM Arizona route, even using RS Cajon Pass content there would have been lot of holes in the foilage needed. With TRS I know that most of what I need is available. While there is more custom content becoming available for RS some of it does not load automatically and need files to be dropped and dragged into RS folders, hardly ideal. I have made on freelance desert route in RS of 70 miles this remains unsignalled because there is no information about US signals, signals have to be added with 3 connections, very clumsy. To get the route to that stage I've had to DL various PDF's from different sites, to find out how to do the basics. Support for US content from RSDL has been fairly pathetic, most extra free downloads have been for Europe and the UK. Although I enjoy driving trains on the Cajon Pass, Bath Green and hte one route I've made I wont be lining up to buy the new version unless there is a lot more US content included, and more improvements generally. But I wont be pining to buy TRS2009 either!

Now that is funny.

that no 'serious' sim fans are using it anymore...
it now looks like a kids playtoy, sorry to say...

I'm not sure about sim fans, but I do know that Trainz is the sim of choice for many "Real Railroaders". The same railroaders that have tried RS, think it's a joke.

The one good thing to come out of this is, how does the saying go?

Good riddance to bad rubbish.

theres SO few on 09, and one's that are, are going 'back' to older versions, cause 09 is so broken that theres no one using it

I don't know were he came up with that information but he's way off. There is quite a few that are using 09 and will continue to use 09. Since SP1 came out I haven't had any problems. The only reason I don't take 04 or 06 out of my computer is to check for backwards compatibility. If he wants to abandon Trainz then more power to him. Later.

How would anyone get the numbers showing how many use what version? What's the version selling in WalMart in the bargain bin? That's the current market leader...:D

Is that how it works? I would have thought that the bargain bin would represent the previous version being dumped to make way for the next one. :o

As someone who has worked with all of the "big three" train sims (and many of the smaller ones) I regard it as excellent news for our hobby.

Despite my previous enthusiasm and support for Trainz, I find myself increasingly drawn to RS and its possibilities. At the risk of being flamed, I find TRS less attractive from a developer's point of view. The programme is fractured and fragmented with so many different versions out there. I tried TS2009 (albeit prior to the patches) but seeing the same old content and nine year old game engine recycled into another "new" version was a step too much. The fact that much of that content appears to have compatibility problems and, despite the patches, people are still flagging up problems (terrain going blue, objects reverting to different height etc.) puts me off. Perhaps the biggest sin is that the best version of TRS to date - Trainz Classics 3 - was left out in the cold and not included, effectively relegated to a standalone version.

Reports of uploaded content not getting to the DLS or being rejected with spurious errors are not encouraging either.

And surely after nine years, Auran could implement one or more of the following:
1. The option of a "proper" AI despatcher and timetable generation mechanism.
2. Ability to set radius of curved splines - this is a huge attraction in RS which allows the flexibility of splined track but with the ability to control the radius of the curve.
3. Tunnels that can be laid at any angle or dead straight i.e. the same as normal track - this has never been fixed since Trainz 1.0.

I will always have a soft spot for TRS and, indeed, once I've finished my current (major) route project for RS I would love to do a TRS version, leastways in TRS2006 - utilising the rich availability of third party content (one of TRS strongpoints compared to RS). However until then I'll content myself with watching from the sidelines.

The new version sounds like the old version with some indeterminate improvements. This may be interesting, it may not.

If EARS remains a driving simulator, it's not of interest to me. If it becomes everything that Trainz is plus more, then of course I'm interested.

PS Shouldn't this be in Prototype Talk?

2) i use the curve checker for that .

3) i use dem terrain and lay my tunnels at any angle , and the entrances are not so big as the original ones; the tunnel itself is made as a bridge and the entrances as scenery .

I've tried various tricks in Surveyor to get "smooth" curves including templates but, really, we shouldn't have to.

I stand by what I said about tunnels - the curent system is and always has been a botched way of of doing it. I also use (Trans)DEM terrain in my TRS routes and that does not change the fact you can only pivot the tunnel entrances at 45 degree intervals and unless you are running at exactly 0, 90, 180 or 270 degrees to the grid virtually impossible to get them in a straight line.

...maybe in ten years...

 I just spent 6 hours running 5 trains with 11 locomotives on the CRR Elkhorn Extension DEM route & the word limit per post would not allow me to include all the experiences I had.
  • My Elkhorn Turn switched all the loaders in Elkhorn City, dropped the loads on the north end of the Allen extension & returned to Dante light, with cab.
  • My Moss Turn had 5 6-axle locomotives from Jointed Rail & RRMods, including 3 C30-7's that flamed-out simultaneously.
  • I started around 11PM & ran all night in the dark, with the gamma turned down.
  • The GE & EMD enginesounds rock!
  • Most of the time I was using dynamic-braking just to keep the train in check, because Elkhorn yard & the Moss tipple tracks are both on severe grades.
  • I found out starting a 6000 ton train on a 1.5%2% grade takes throttle, auto-brake, independent brake, RailDriver & patience.
Yes competition is good for business...:hehe:

Thats true when you use the standard build in tunnels , but is to overcome when you make your own .
