rolling stock

What is the name of the rolling stock which hauls big machinery, back hoe, caterpillar etc? Has a lower mid section and it must be a little wider, a caterpillar on a flat car looks kind of odd. Thanks

Have a look at the BR 20T Lowmax EP By Kemplen. kuid2:84609:50186:1. It's a nice and useful item of rolling stock.

Peter.

Sometimes my searches, well, lets just say needs improving. Thanks exactly what I was after.

I believe it was Joe (SocalWB909) that made a really nice one over at Jointed Rail too. Look for the Conrail Depressed Flat in the Flatcars section of freeware rolling stock. You must be logged in to see the freeware.

Maybe also interesting: Flatcar 6 Axle Depressed Center Empty, kuid2:86105:15120:2, found on the DLS.

Yes that is what I was after, have 2 now but this one would be real nice in the consist too, hope I can find that one also

Search for "KRL" or philskene and you will find the one above on the DLS

Search for "Hicapy" and you will find some older ones by bendorsey.

For some reason multi-axle and depressed center flatcars are not modeled much.

One of Ben's (I think I repainted it).

Edit: oh, yes there is the CEBX 800 too. :D

You know, I was going to mention that one (since I went through with all of the millions of pieces, updating it to work in TS12) but changed my mind since it really didn't have a deck for carrying anything. The free Rob4Rails one is not quite as spiffy as Ocemy's payware version, but still a very nice high capacity car. I think the multi-bogey ones aren't modeled much because they can't really be done to work right as a single car: You really need to build a "car" with 2 bogies as the carrier on each end and couple them to the real car with invisible bogies under it or else the carriers don't follow curves. They just take a lot more work to build than a standard car.

Couple of comments about this type of car: although most people who pay attention to trains will see one once in a while, high capacity flat cars are not particularly common in North America. They carry a performance penalty for the railroad: their size means they must travel at lower speeds than most other freight, and they need special routing. The shippers pay for this performance penalty, of course. One note about the use of the real cars: they are certainly used to haul bits of large earth moving equipment, but the fact is that most of the time the equipment is not particularly recognizable for what it will be. A large bulldozer or trackhoe that is recognizable as such does not weigh enough to need one of these depressed center flats to move, and the railroad clearance height is such that anything you can recognize is light enough to ride a conventional flat.

The vehicles that are big enough to require transport on a high capacity flat car, such as mining trucks and such, are manufactured in a way that the vehicle divides into pieces each of which fits within a clearance area of about 10' x 18'. This means that most of the large mining trucks and other very large earth moving equipment seen is not really recognizable as such, as it is shipped in bits that are assembled at the site.

If you're running one of these cars on your route, and attempting to do so as real railroads would, they will always be entrained just behind the locomotive, and the train will move at a speed of no more than about 30 miles per hour. Because of the restrictions on operations, there is a good chance that you will see more than one of these cars at the front of the same train. I've seen as many as 7, in that case, probably 5 different shipments. Because of the operational restrictions, if the railroads have two loads, they'll put them at the front of the same train, so as not to have two trains which have to travel at slow speeds.

Note, too, that the Schnabel cars (like the one from Ocemy) get a special train, and sometimes more than one. I witnessed a move on the UP's former Katy line several years ago, where there was a high-rail truck followed about a half mile by a set of 7 light engines (that is, no load) followed by another high-rail vehicle, and a set of 4 engines pulling two empty piggyback length flat cars, a loaded Schnabel car two more empty piggyback length flat cars, and a caboose (not railroad owned), followed by a final train consisting of a train pulling a two passenger cars, and one of the UP's business cars.

Thanks gentlemen, regarding the Schnabel cars, I havent figured out how to use those yet. Doesnt seem to me that they are interactive but then I havent ever seen one assembled or managed to assemble one in Trainz.
Regarding mjolnir post above, I can recall seeing flat cars back in the day when all them grain elevators were the skyline in small towns, but as of late, cant say have I seen them.
The graphic depiction of a Train with fully loaded equipment looks good going down the rails in Trainz but I realize that its not very realistic, however Im not building a virtual rail lines, totally ficticious one, while I learn all the tricks to this software.

Racn thank you for reminding me about that Depressed Center that's been sitting around in my CM waiting for me to complete it.

I just uploaded it. :D Should be available in a couple of days. Railcar KRL 45826 <kuid:633834:100823> (this is a one car consist of the assembled railcar)

Phil's Schnabel car is pretty easy to assemble, just take the parts in order as they are listed in the CM and they go right together, and it is interactive. The CEBX is not interactive but mine, above, is as are some of bendorsey's. Once you get one assembled quickly save it as a consist so you don't have to assemble it ever again. :hehe:

KRL 300300 12 axle depressed center flatcar. Model by bendorsey repaint by me. Should be available in a couple of days. (actually the 300300 is 6 x 4 wheel bogies but close enough for now)

Guess Im thick in the head when it comes to assembling the Schnabel pcs when in surveyor. Could someone assemble one and put a pic in this thread so I can see what its supposed to look like? Thanks

Well now isnt that quite the unit, holy. Hope I can figure out that assembly with these pics. There is this Connector piece its called which I am having difficulty with in the assemblies I was trying. Also it seems the full pack gave me a loaded depressed centre which I was using incorrectly.

Edit: And a big Thank you sir

D'oh

What you want is

"CEBX 800 Empty" <kuid:528206:100314> and
"CEBX 800 Loaded" <kuid:528206:100313>
by slabay

These are consists that assemble the railcar for you.

LOL

and don't thank me thank Rob4Rails who did the original model and slabay who upgraded it for TS12 (if you think it's confusing for you imagine how much trouble they had)

1 st pic is the order they were in Surveyor, once I realized the 1st 2 were extra and just needed all the bogies made sense what you said about assembling them in the listed order. Have had this DLC for some time, is going to be very nice to use it. Thank you

and assembled
