Retrieve route from driver session?

I have been playing TS12 since Christmas. I've only just started to learn the ropes as to backing up and how to make use of the route and session layers. However something strange occurred two weeks ago. My saved route file switched from the default one which I'd created (entitled GCR) to an autosave file. I've been continuing to build my route over the last two weeks but instead of TS12 using my default GCR route file, it's been using the autosave. My driver sessions have continued to build up over time, under the old default GCR route. Now the autosave file has disappeared!!!

I've now lost the route which I was working on. I've still got my original GCR route but it's two weeks out-of-date. I also still have a driver session which is pretty much up-to-date and plays fine. But unfortunately it's not possible to edit it. I'm so tantalisingly close to having my route back - it's so frustrating to play it but unable to edit it!

Is it possible to convert the driver session back to a route? Or transfer the changes or merge the session with the original route (GCR) file? Bare in mind it only appears as a driver session and doesn't appear in session layers from surveyor. Or is it possible to reinstate the old autosave file? I am aware of their being a backup folder.

Any help would be appreciated!

Unfortunately, you cannot convert a saved driver session back into a Surveyor route/session - it's simply not possible. In terms of the backup folder, it's at <trainz install folder>/UserData/Backups, but it only stores a limited amount of days worth. You can use Import Content in Content Manager to import content from that folder.

Thanks for the reply. I'll take a look at the backup folder again. I wasn't sure how to retrieve the backups so I'll give it a go from the content manager. Really appreciate your comments - thank you.

I would check in CM first incase it got saved with a different kuid number. If it did then the session has become detached from it.

Thanks to shane! Its now working! Thank you. This problem is now resolved. I deleted the last auto save file which was corrupt and restored my previous autosave from a backup. Pleased to have the route back!

G'day applemanuk & shaneturner12,

...my apologies for resurecting this somewhat 'old' thread but I am not sure I understand the process you undertook to achieve the end result you achieved. In a manner like you, I have just lost the last three or four hours of work on my route (due to a "black-out", which was outside of my control) and I want to recover the most recent "autosave" copy (created prior to the black-out) of the route and restore it to my ORIGINAL route file. How do I do this?

G'day All (again),

...can nobody help me with this? Work on my route has ground to halt because of this little problem...

G'day shanetruner12,

...thanks for the response, Shane, I had almost given up hope on getting any assistance...

...your suggestion (the blattantly obvious one, at that) was an option I tried right at the start but when I did, I only got the option to ..."Save the route As"... another route; Trainz would insist on saving the accompanying "Session" as the "Autosave" 'variation' ONLY, without allowing me to remove the "Autosave" 'tag'. Given that, I baulked and quit the 'Save' process. Taking you up on your suggestion (and summoning up my courage), I went through the whole process to completion and after closing and reopening Trainz, I found (as perhaps I expected to do), that I now have TWO sessions, from which I can choose, associated with my original route. This is NOT the result I wanted. I want to OVERWRITE the 'original' session with the "Autosave" version and have only the ONE session (called as per the route - not with an "Autosave" suffix) from which to choose when opening the route. How would I do this?...

That's because of the way Save As works, however it is possible to change the name of the session during the Save As process by clicking Create New Session and entering the original session's name.

G'day shaneturner12,

..well, Shane, that will be my next attempt, although I have to say that from an experienced programmer's point of view, I reckon that's an odd way to do it. From "the other side of the coin" (the end user), when I see an option that purports to allow me to create a 'new' something from from a list, I expect to find something 'new' at the end of the process, not the ability to overwrite something already there...

...I'll let you know how it goes...

G'day shaneturner12,

...well, no matter what I tried to do, Shane, I was not able to alter the option to rename the session, despite your clear instructions. The option remained 'greyed out' and inaccessible at all times. However, as I was able to save the route file with a new name, I chose to do so with a name that distinguished it from the other saves and back in C.M.P., I was able to track down the session that was associated with it and after checking that these files were 'intact', I deleted the other unwanted files and renamed the new ones (via the config.txt files) to reflect my requirements and I am now back where I was before the black-out (albeit with different kuid identifiers - a very minor inconvenience)...

You did exactly what I was going to suggest! :D

G'day JCitron,

...that action was always in the 'back of my mind', John, as a possibility (only having just recently learned that one could do so to overcome the 15 character naming limit imposed by Trainz when creating a route using TransDEM) but as a relative newcomer to that sort of thing, I guess my insecurities required 'confirmation' prior to action (although, in this case, I did just "take the plunge", anyway)...

...fortunately, it all worked out and more importantly, there is now a viable option for anyone else to take, should they find themselves in a similar situation...
