Editing a session from a loaded route

Hello all, I am puzzled by the window pop up after selecting EDIT SESSION when I have loaded a route and also about the session layer when editing a route, that I hope that someone may be able to answer. The Window that pops up is headed Edit Session and shows the Name, Session Description and Rules. The Name showing is Default - and it appears I can edit this, but not sure why. However, my questions are these ... I have 3 sessions associated with the route I just opened, why doesn't the the Edit Session window allow you to choose - say from a drop down - the name of the session you wish to edit? Do I have to type in the name of the session I want to edit? Or am I missing something here?
I am using TRS22PE with a route and 3 sessions. After loading Trainz I select the route I wish to edit then select EDIT ROUTE. Then with the route open in S20, I select EDIT SESSION from the drop down.
The reason I ask this ... my normal work flow is to make changes to the route, then EXIT SURVEYOR - Prompted to save, then Save route and do not save session, then back to the routes, (select route) then VIEW SESSIONS and then select the session I wish to edit.
The other work around I was wondering about was this ... when you have loaded a route and editing, the route layer is selected, BUT you can also select the session layer and edit that. My question is along the same vein, with 3 sessions associated with the route, what session am I editing?

I think I understand the main principle of routes and their sessions, but I am having trouble managing moving between the two with certainty that my changes are being made where i want them to be made.

Thanks, Stu

Going back to the basics, when you select the Driver / Surveyor option from the main TRS22 screen, you will be given a list at the bottom of the screen of all the installed routes.

If you click on a route then at the bottom right corner of the screen is a button labeled View Sessions. Click this button to list all the Sessions that have been built based on this route. If the list is empty then no sessions are available. If sessions are available then click on one, and again look at the buttons on the bottom right. If they only show Delete, Create and Drive then that session is a Saved Game and cannot be edited, only deleted or played. If the button list includes Edit then it is a Session which you can load and edit as well as the route it is based on.

If you load just the route, without selecting a session as well, then Trainz will automatically create a new empty Session-Layer. You can add assets to that layer if you wish. You can also edit features such as Session Rules, Driver List, Command List, commodity levels in rolling stock and industries, etc that are always saved in a session. When you exit Trainz (or select the Save option) you will be asked if you want to save the session as well as the route. If you opt to save only the route then those changes you made to the session layer and session properties (e.g. the driver list) will be lost. If you decide to save the session data you have just added as well as the route it is important to give the session a name - simply to make it easier for you to identify otherwise Trainz will use the name "Default" and you could easily have several different sessions all named "Default".

There is a Trainz Wiki page that covers all of this and more - at Route_and_Session_Basics

As described above. If you edit the session layer or session properties of a route where you have not loaded an existing session, then Trainz will create a NEW session which you can save. It will not affect any of the existing sessions.

Ah! That is VERY helpful to know!!. I have read lots about routes and sessions and don’t recall seeing this. Your description should be included in the Wiki. NOW it makes sense what is going on. Thank you!
