Recommended routes?

You may want to check out the Murchison Stage 2 layout. Its extensive (400 boards) ... choke full of interactive industries and includes both NG and SG lines.

here is the screenshot forum postings for a whole lot of screenshots

It is a free download from TRAINZONE but will require the payware NATURE SERIES to give it the high standard of 3D photorealism

NATURE SERIES 1 (animated waterfalls / river splines / 200 texture set)
NATURE SERIES 2 (cliff splines / rail ledge splines / rock splines)

The layout webpage is at

THE MURCHISON LAYOUT (TRAINZONE website)

cheers
Michael

Hi BDFord,

My Gorre & Daphetid uses only built in goodies, except I accidentally included some rolling stock, some of which is not available on the DLS. Ignore the rolling stock and enjoy the layout.

Hi BDFord,

did you build the small one, the original layout version? That is BRILLIANT and gets my all time favourite small layout award! I have had so much fun noodling around that thing. Well done, John would have been pleased.

BD

PS: was there a crossover at Daphetid? I cant recall, otherwise you have to push shunt cars up there, without a runaround.

The small G&D is mine. I don't remember if I put a run around in Daphetid. I don't think so because the prototype didn't have one, and there's no turntable up there anyway.
I assure you, if you put some track there for a runaround, you won't hurt my feelings. :D Enjoy yourself.
If you download a layout and you don't like it, you can delete it in Content Manager. You should also get Trainz Object. It works great for TRS04. I'm not sure how I lived without it.
Click on my link below and check out my toys. I also did the Minato Railway, which was the first Japanese prototype on the DLS. We didn't have nearly as much Japanese content back then, but I think it came out okay. I'm also still fond of the Furuya layout and Makatini Junction. (both fictional)

Dave - you haven't got a lot of replies that tell why a person likes a recommended route. Let me recommend a couple and tell you why I l ike them.

1. Murchison route - obtained at trainzone web site given a few posts earlier by Sirgibby. Why do I like it?

a. very easy to install and everything needed is there with full installation instructions. There is a 2004 version and a 2006 version, and they both run 'right out of the box' in XP.

b. has both standard and narrow gauge - many tens of miles of each - a couple of portals for standard gauge. Two interchange points between narrow and standard gauge.

c. has railroad ferry, helicopter, and cruise types of operations .

d. lot of interactive industries with plenty of trackmarks.

e. there are a number of sessions provided including one that demonstrates the rolling stock that works with the various interactive industries and the several types of load/unload track types. I believe it is this one that also has a selection of the interactive industries already set up to use.

f. the route is well designed for a player that likes both over-the-road and yard operations.

g. there is a full set of maps, tables of industries and their relationships to each other, etc.

h. if I understand right, you don't have to buy the payware. I believe the route is OK without it, but the scenery is much much better with it, and the payware is such that you can use it in building your own routes. To me, it is worth evey penny.

I like to develop and run my own sessions, and I spend a lot of time with Murchison because, although I have never worked for a railroad, I think you can set things up quite realistically.

2. Austral Bay v5a, Port Ogden and Northern, Mad River, and Beside the River routes by philskene. Why?

a. the most recent of the bunch is the PO&N, which I downloaded from the DLS with no missing assets at all. For the Austral Bay route when I downloaded it some time back, there was one missing asset, but Phil supplied the source for getting that.

b. numerous sessions are available, and they include maps, some instructions and very broad hints.

c. a centerpiece of all but the Mad River route is the 16 portals and the opportunities they give for introducing plenty of challenge in operations against a steady movement of trains that have priority over yours.

d. especially the Beside the River route has some beautiful bridges that I haven't seen in others - drawbridge, lift bridge, over and under bridge, etc.

e. a well-designed route that is fun to run, whether you are the long haul engineer, the dispatcher, or the yard engineer.

f. many miles of track with many interactive industries with just about all types of load/unload tracks.

I spend a lot of time with these routes, too.

Hope this speaks to what you asked for.

Dick

I'm going to add my favourites here, they are the ones I enjoy running the most, although I have heavily modified most of them to suit my own personal preferences.

H
"Heartbeat 2004."......the North Yorkshire Moors and Esk Valley lines. I have also re-instated the Yorkshire Coast Railways from Whitby to Saltburn and Middlesborough, and now I am working my way down the coast to Hull!

Angela's "Kent and East Sussex" layout.....not done much with this one as it's a really atmospheric rural Branch Line. I have just installed Main Line running loops at each end.

"Ffestiniog Railway." Narrow gauge, very enjoyable to operate.

"Turks Castle"....The West Somerset Railway, both in Standard Gauge and the earlier Broad Gauge versions.

"The Isle of Rutland",....oops, sorry, this is one of my own creations not currently on the DLS. I keep intending to upload it, but, somehow, it just never gets completed, although it has undergone many changes and improvements since I first started building it over four years ago.

Hello DaveMcB, I will give a small list of my personal favourites, which are all for TRS2004, some from my list have already been mentioned below such as Angelah's routes and the German route niddertalbahn.
If you want some European electric routes, may I suggest Paris (Montparnasse), and the German layouts Ostalgie - 3 versions very big - and Weistrizbahn, these can also be used for steam locomotives as well, all routes are off the DLS, superbly textured and buildings depicting the local areas. Some of these routes also require assets from French, German, Polish, Czech websites etc, but when you have obtained everything, they are wonderful layouts to play on.
For UK layouts, any by gamerouche ( new Barton Hill - my favourite ) any by harcourt ( UK pastures - my favourite ) also kimmy's route two bridges v2. These are superbly textured and give you that British countryside feel with open fields, farmlands, rivers and the coastline. You will need to download UK electric locomotives to get the full impact from operating in a British fashion. These are all for both passenger and freight train workings, so they'll keep you very busy.....:hehe:
For North American routes off the DLS, try leefer, chrisracer8903, doolinator, gfisher, jjslll54, jrcrawford4, Neandertal and cincysouthernrwy.
These are my own favourites btw...
If you need to go to any websites, the I would suggest TrainzProRoutes, for all of their routes, look in the goodies section as well on their forum for other less well publicised layouts, and euphod did a wonderful winter route with lots of snow, not sure you'd want to play with that in the summer though.....:hehe:
Also try TrainzEasternRoutes, and the Appalachian Mountains by John Bethuy.
Cannot remember any more at the moment, but that's enough for one day......
Happy trainzing.

Cheerz. ex-railwayman.

thanks for the plug. Although the Ashland Central V2 seems to get a lot of downloads, I think that my personal favorite of mine is the AC - Cresent Mountain Div. I'm about to start on another route to merge with the Cresent Mountain.

There are some great routes out there. It just depends on what you're looking for. Some of these creators are genius'.

I like Mike's stuff, too but you have to spell it right to see all he has to offer.

Have fun,

Rick

:)

You're quite right Rick, I couldn't remember if it was 2 f's and 2 r's, or 2 e's and 2 f's, or 2 e's, 2 f's and 2 r's, darn it Mike, why can't you just call yourself something rememorable....:hehe:

Ex.

I'm terribly sorry about the name. Once I realized that it couldn't be changed, it was too late. The Leeferr is the combination of my middle name (Lee) and the first part of my last name (Ferrell). Oh well...life goes on and I'll just have to live with it now.

I downloaded Cumberland to Connellsville. You said it can be easily converted to TS2006. I have TS2009 and around the tracks the grid is showing through. Do you know how to correct this ?

Ericsand I just went into 2009 and went through the Cumberland to Connellsville and I see no problem with my route. Are you missing anything ?
