Railroad Safety.

I was just thinking about the LA Metrolink/UP crash that occured a couple of months ago, and thought about the cause of the crash, text messageing. It seems as though this could have been prevented, actually it very easily could have. What do you think should be done about this arising safety issue? Plus what other accidents or safety violations can you think of that could have been prevented? I think it would be nice to discuss these issues right here.

Congraduations Woody!:Y: This is 56th thread you started since May 2008. That is over 5 new threads every month. There must be a prize or something for this feat.

Betcha this gets hot-n-heavy, lol.

OK - here goes. Lets use driving a car as an example. I don't think anyone driving a car should be doing anything other then driving the car and maybe listening to music softly enough so as not to interfere with your ability to hear what is occuring outside the car (emergency vehicles for example). Any and all devices requiring you to take you hands off the wheel or avert your vision off the road should be disabled when the car is moving by a device installed in the car. Severe penalties for removing or disabling the device.

As an experiment - stand on a busy corner and watch what the folks in the left turn lane are doing while waiting for the turn signal to change to green (down right scarey).

No reading the newspaper, working crossword puzzles, doing your nails, combing your hair, etc (the list is almost endless).

The ACLU will immediately go into the rabid dog mode but so what. Seat belts are a mandatory safety feature in all States and crash helmets for motorcyclists in at least half and they don't interfere with your operation of the vehicle so a mandatory "keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road" (no-gadgets) rule makes a heck of a lot of sense.

On the lighter side I'd bet if you could listen in to what most folks are saying it would be a waste of breath, lol.

The FRA and most railroads have already stepped up with a rule on this. We are not allowed to have our PEDs(personal electronic devices) turned on while the train is moving. We can use our cell phones for voice communications while the train is stopped and both crew members are in the cab of the loco.

How in the world is this rule enforced? Do they search your cab?

Unfortantly Seth that is the crule reality of it.
Robert Sanchez should not have sent 2?? text messages while operating the Metrolink train...but he did and it cost 25 people their lives and left 138 more in the hospital. Please everyone do remember this when your phone buzzes with a TM in your car.

Just say no to texting kids

He also should not have been personally associating with, (allegedly, given locomotive cab rides to, etc...), and text communicating with other (peoples) minors (children, adolescents)...which brings up the ultimate question of PED_ _ _ _ _ _ , and Personal Electronic Devices.
