I owned MSTS before Trainz came out way back in 2000, 2001 (whenever). Somebody back then probably said the same thing you did: MSTS is good, whats the point of another simulator... The point of another simulator is "competition." Without another product out there, things become stale and innovation isn't regarded very highly. Now if Rail Simulator gains momentum (which it seems like), TRS will need to improve, and thats a win for everybody. Yes there is a point to buy a new simulator, when you own another one... Trainz doesn't spell Rail Simulator, unless my eyes are deceiving me :hehe:
If you don't want to spend money on RS, thats fine, your choice!![]()
The "competition" argument is, I"m afraid , slightly bogus.
The "competition" argument is, I"m afraid , slightly bogus. Its the same excuse given for the nationalisation of Britains railway system and the reason why many lines have LESS service than they did, but with a profusion of garish liveries and vasyly increased subsidies from the taxpayer. In reality , even if every single Trainz Creator "remodelled" their Content for KJRS how long would it take> And wouldn"t it simply result in (after a few years) KJRS having the same content as Trainz? Won"t it in fact mean that some Creators will simply move to KJRS and thus Trainz will be "diluted"?
However, I"ll restate that "in my opinion" the shots here are "as good as" Trainz - no better , no worse. My holding such opinion won't prevent "the community moving forward" !

I'm not talking about you, personally, but rather those people, collectively, who share your somewhat blinkered opinion. These are the people who think that saying something positive about RS is like committing some heinous crime.
The fact is, like it or not, RS looks fabulous. I wish the locos in TRS looked as impressive. The trouble is, generally, they don't and until people like you acknowledge that fact the rest of us in the community, who want TRS to progress, will have to wait a long time until we see the same quality. That's because if we don't demand something better the team at Auran won't feel compelled to deliver it.
So, yes, in way, if your opinion holds sway you will prevent the community moving forward.

So will we have the pleasure of seeing one of your beastys in RS?
If you will then im willing to pay twice as much than you charged in Trs.
Hi, Overmars -
The simple answer to that question is "dunno"! I'd love to give it a try. I haven't had a chance to take a closer look at the RS model format but you only have to take a cursory glance at the in game stock to realise it offers content creators far more scope.
I'm guessing that the texture maps are really big - which would be a real joy to work with. I also suspect the format may make better use of Bump maps - perhaps even Normal maps. If there are additional options for employing other "greyscale" maps as well then people can really go to town.
So, again, I don't know. I'll have to have a play and see how it feels. One thing I will say, however, is that Peak locos never made a great impact in MSTS - so perhaps there could be an opening in RS!

They have some pretty nifty things that Trainz doesn't.![]()
I have to say, I am very impressed with these pics. Some of them are outstanding. I notice that RS seems to have a far greater draw distance than Trainz. By that, I mean buildings and railways are shown in greater detail even though they are quite far from the camera.
One gripe though. Still no-one has invented a simple switch to turn steam engines off when they are not being used. Shame.
Best wishes,
Padster
The thing that sticks out immediately (for me) in the bottom image is the shadows. The shadow beneath the loco is particularly effective.
