Rail Fanning Springfield, Illinois 1/19/2013

I shot this video of the same Amtrak train (the Cardinal), a little over 3 years ago deep within the New River Gorge in the old railroad town of Thurmond, W.Va., the smallest incorporated town in the state (pop. five persons, per the 2010 Census). Being a flag stop, there aren't many folks who board or debark at Thurmond. Most folks in the area use Prince, the next station down the line.

The sound was recorded separately, using a couple of high quality condenser mics and a Micro Trak II digital recorder and the sound was then resynced to the video. If you have decent speakers, crank the volume up and enjoy the natural ambiance of the gorge and the deep rumble of the train.

There may have been a misinterpretation of what I meant by Amtrak #50. What I meant was that the locomotive's road number was 50, not the train number.

Okay dokie. Since Amtrak trains Nos. 50 & 51 (NYC to Chicago) run through Illinois I assumed you were talking about Amtrak #50.

What Amtrak train is in your video?

I would assume just a regular commuter train. I think the train number is 306 or something like that.

I pulled up the schedules for passenger trains going thru Springfield, and I came up with the following trains passing thru there. All stop at Springfield:
Amtrak Texas Eagle (Trains #22 (northbound), #21 (southbound))
Amtrak Lincoln Services (Trains #301, 303, 305, 307 (All southbound), #300, 302, 304, and 306 (All northbound))
I assume you saw the train in the late afternoon, you would have probably seen either northbound Lincoln Service trains #304 or 306. They stop at Springfield at 4:56PM (#304) and 7:32PM. The only southbounds that stop in Springfield in the late afternoon are Lincoln Services #305 and 307, and they stop there at 8:39PM (#305) and 10:24PM (#307).

That's odd. in that video, it was early afternoon when that train was heading southbound across North Grand Ave. at about 1 or 1:30 P.M.

You probably saw Lincoln Service southbound #303, which stops in Springfield at 12:50PM. I'm getting these times from the 'Illinois-Missouri Services' schedule on Amtrak's official website: www.amtrak.com
