Question before buying

Hello all,

QUESTION :) When you buy a First Class Ticket (for instance GOLD) it states 1) No limit on downloads 2) A faster download speed.

What is, roughly, the average download speed when using such First Class Ticket ? (knowing that I have a broadband connection here in the USA)

Thank you !!

Oliver

With an active FCT, the speed will then depend on your ISP connection instead of being capped.

For me, its average of 2MB/s on the larger files, and for the smaller ones just within seconds.

Cheers

It's not lightning fast with a FCT, but without a FCT downloading a lot of assets is tortuously slow

It's only as fast as the slowest link, meaning your local ISP 99% of the time. If you have 2 MB/s then you'll get that most of the time.

To add to what others have said here regarding the FCT, the FCT has no limitation on the amount of content, thus, there is no data limit which is there on a non-FCT connection which is restricted to 100MB per day. With assets approaching nearly 30 and 40 MB and up due to LOD and seasonal textures, this limitation comes pretty fast.

One final note on this, with recent versions it seems the size of the assets is growing ever larger. Most were KB in size, with occasionally one larger than one or two megabytes. A lot of the newer assets are coming out in Megabytes and often tens of Megabytes. at the speed of a non-FCT connection I find it can take an hour or even a few hours to download an asset. It is ridiculous, but n3v is not raising their non-fct downloads speed to compensate, so I think they may have more and more users hanging on to downloads for longer and longer periods of time.

On my Gig speed internet connection, I get 350-370MB/s speeds on a FCT, compared to 4.5 Kb/s without FCT
--it took 4 hours yes FOUR HOURS to download a 67.7MB Route yesterday .. I had to actually use the DLS white pages, because TS12 would simply sit and spin for an hour, trying to figure out how to download such a large file on such a slow connection.

The slow connection could be due to a lot of people using the internet for many things. There are many people working from home, online schooling, purchasing, and doing other things which has put a strain on our networks overall. I have noticed awful connections not just to the DLS, but to other websites I frequent with Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday being the worst and in some cases requiring a reboot of my router.

TS12 has always had poor network connectivity to begin with and this isn't helping much. The direct FTP client works because it's outside of this horrible beast to begin with.

My average download non-fct peaks about 9KB/sec, but is often lower. I have been all day trying to download a couple of loco interiors at 25MB apiece! and those are for locos that were almost as big, and they had other MB+ dependencies! IT is currently downloading at 4.8 KB/sec.

AND, this is the second time downloading! In T:ANE, large downloads often would end with an error that it failed, connection interrupted. But the download was actually done, and right-clicking and selecting download again would go ahead and install. NOW with 2019, it quits with no error, but the asset still says available for Download. If I right-click it and select Download again, it throws an error that it can't parse it somewhere in the build folder! So it has it but it doesn't like it! Sometimes I can download it again after waiting a while, other time I have to do a DBR. I think they broke thebroken downloads in 2019.

The content store has something wrong with the status. This view error message, therefore, is bogus. Tony said this is on the ever growing list to fix sometime soon(tm).

The rest of the download issues, dropping off in speed is due to clogged networks. I noticed that I can download at normal speeds at 8:00 pm my time, but forget about doing anything like that earlier. I just had a network issue a few minutes ago that disconnected me from the network requiring me to reset my router to reestablish a connection again. The net is just overwhelmed now with everyone home-schooling, and working remotely.

Just tested using edh6's PBR loco updates 38 of them so largish files.
Slow to start but quickly speeded up according to the values in Manage Content to 1.6 MB/s which is 13 Mbps or thereabouts. However on my Bit Meter app and in the Router It was showing 3MB/s or 24Mbps, which is I think is pretty much what the DLS speed is supposed to be. I don't think the CM speeds are accurate.

Not actually getting any problems on my ISP, BT fibre 75Mbps, 4G (Three) however is running like a dead slug at ADSL speeds, too many users on the local mast, my other 4G which is EE is fine at around 80Mbps during the day and 100+ after midnight.

Both BT and EE, now owned by BT apparently have sufficient capacity to deal with home working, Three, AKA Hutchison Telecom clearly do not. I'm guessing not all ISPs are coping with the overload.

I am only seeing actual internet slowing (browsing, streaming, non-trainz use, etc.), if I use a VPN, and bounce around the globe a bit. All direct connects are at full gig/speed numbers from prior to February 1st. The non-FCT 4.5Kb/s I stated above has been my average non-FCT speed for years, well, actually 3.5Kb/s is more accurate prior to a 2019 equipment upgrade.

That makes more sense! :)

A VPN connection will be slower in general.

I am high-speed with a non-vpn, and third party sites are consistently fast. The speed from CM seems related to the asset, as some seem to slow way down. But Non-FCT is never faster than 9K. But I can imagine with the growing size of assets there are a lot more downloads going at once, because they take way longer than they used to. And that can clog any server up. I am downloading most of the time any more, so I hardly ever stop except to close it all out each morning and restart so I get the list of new uploads :). Right now I am downloading Eggliners at 4.58k and if that is not a waste of time and servers I don't know what is LOL!
