I have a question ... Possibly mlplap7902 would know.
The Portage Railroad was for the most part a canal all the way from Duncannon to Hollidaysburg ... and from there, it was a hemp rope cable drawn series of 10 inclined plane RR from Hollidaysburg to Johnstown.
It was upgraded to a 2 track Hollidaysburg & Petersburg branch RR, connecting from Petersburg to @ Cove Forge/Carlim ... and my maps show from Cove Forge/Carlim to Hollidaysburg was just single tracked ... single tracked through Duncansville Wye ... then again double tracked through the Muleshoe Curve all the way to Tunnelhill.
Is this correct ?
I would imagine that having only telegraph Morse code communications to dictate block to block train orders, controling a single tracked line, would have made train traffic control a dispatchers nightmare.
Was this line ever totally double tracked ?
