Poll

Hi Everybody.
Nothing against payware loco's or any other payware here provided that it is good quality assets and comes with good service from the provider (example, downloads and installs without problems).

I think that this thread is plain nonsense. The user has a choice as to whether or not to buy payware locos. There are more than enough freeware assets available to make playing the game without payware more than possible, so I really dont see any point in starting a poll on the subject.

Sometimes a user may want a particular loco that is only available as payware but they have the choice as to whether or not to buy. I respect any creator's choice as to whether or not their hard work is issued as payware or freeware and think that if we are going to run a thread involving a poll that we actually have one about a worthwhile topic that allows reasoned debate!

I support payware to the extent that I am a CAPITALIST and believe in the ENTREPRENEUR and his/her rights to sell their products for a profit. Whether I choose to purchase is solely up to me, but I would rather have the choice, than have to accept what is parceled out to me at the discretion of someone else.

I think in general one gets a better loco (atleast out of the American creators) from a payware site. However that isn't to say that I'd rather not pay for them.

Hi Bill

I agree with your comment, with the added emphasis on 'good quality'

Good evening everyone.

The egalitarian side of me leans towards freeware.

Euphod’s point would carry some weight if there were true choice in payware, i.e. a bespoke model built to the purchasers exacting standards.

But how many are built to order?

Therefore, isn’t payware, in the same way as freeware, also “parcelled out ... at the discretion of someone else”? Unless its built to order, you can only choose from what is there.

Some of the European freeware locos are built, textured and able to perform to the highest standards. There must be as much, if not more, excellent choice out there amongst the freeware creators.

Cheers

I totally agree with Andy.

Exactly my point, and the point of having a choice. Strictly speaking, freeware is not "made to order", except under special circumstances, and payware may or may not be made to order depending on the creator\purchaser relationship or contract. In both examples you have a choice, to download or not.
My example of content being parceled out by someone else would obviously only apply to content originally supplied with the game, which you are denied the choice to use or not. Of course, to decide to NOT use supplied built in content could also deny you the use of the basic game.
In closing then, my point could be best summed up by celebrating the choice of both freeware or payware. You have the choice to obtain both, or neither, or either as you please. Luckily we are not limited to the built in content supplied with the game.
If an item is not up to your exacting standards, you are not compelled to obtain it, whether free or payware, but if by chance you find something that satisfies your desires you then may choose to obtain it.

Those that revile payware often are acting out of jealousy for content they desire, but cannot obtain, for whatever their reasons are. That smacks of Socialism to me, and I won't abide it in my household.

Obviously, the quantity and quality of freeware out there has spoiled everyone. You're probably going to see more payware since N3V's decision to block upload of legacy content. There certainly isn't a lot of 2010 content being produced, either freeware or payware, and I'm skeptical that we'll see the quantity of 2010 content like we did with 2004.

I've seen freeware that's good enough to be payware and I've seen payware that really should be freeware. Quality is a tough thing to judge.

The only reason why i hate payware locos cause if u download it and ur loco is laggy and u delete it and u dont get ur money back.

Well, you might as well upgrade your system.
Or,don't buy it in the first place.

Most digital goods are "Caveat emptor" and thus it is your problem after you bought it.

It is impossible to get a refund on digital goods.

Why?

Because some people may use that to get it for free. And so digital goods are not able to be refunded.

Now to explain....

A person buys something and loves it,but he wants it for free. So he tells the seller he didn't want it and gets a refund. But he still has it. So basically,he pirated it.

Its the same with chocolate bars - if you bite it and then decide you don't like it would you expect to be given your money back?
