Please help me love Trainz 12

Hi all!

I've amassed a few questions since purchasing Trainz 12 through Steam (Mistake #1?), and sadly they are causing me to fall out of love with it fast, so any help you guys can offer is very much appreciated!

Q1. How do I stop my couplers breaking on the 'easy' built-in 2 hour Mojave - Bakersfield run? The minute I step up from throttle setting one they break!

Q2. I have a first class ticket, and apparently 517 updates to install according to the opening menu, however updating even the first item is proving impossible, having left my pc on for 5 hours today, the download just stalled a tenth of the way through on the very first item. Is this just because of a horrific throttled download rate, even with a FCT, or could it be something else?

Q3. I'm an achievement junkie, but alot of them don't seem to be updating, i.e. spend 10 hours in cab mode (which is showing 0% progress despite many hours in the cab) and 2 completed ECML scenarios (although I did'nt achieve a score of 100 on either). Are the achievments broke or am I potentially not satisfying the criteria?

Sorry for all the questions, but I'm feeling like I've paid £34.99 for a broken or unfinished game which I'd dearly like to enjoy!

Q4. Is TRS2010 any good?!

Cheers,

Harry

If your First Class Ticket is not being recognised, try the following:

1.Change your password in your profile (click Planet Auran above, then click Edit Account. You can then click the Edit link next to Password. You can re-enter the same password, just make sure Trainz is not running at the time.
2.If you have items in the Download Helper panel in Content Manager (you can access this by clicking Content on the Launcher), click the Clear button.

Speaking of multiplayer, it is very unlikely you will be able to do this in TS12, as your version does not have any patches that can be installed to bring it in line with the version direct from N3V. Also, be aware that TS2010 will also have the same patch-related issue if you buy it from Steam.

Shane, the ref to multi-player was to Q4 which was about 2010.
Harry, don't get a steam version (for 2010) which as you said was your #1 problem, Amazon will do an auran disc version, or get the download version and save to disc (you'll need 2 dvd discs).

I did notice, I'd thought I'd better give an advance warning regarding TS12's multiplayer.

Regarding TS2010 and download versions, the only place to get this from is direct from N3V (or possibly Just Trains) - the Amazon download version has the same build number issue as the Steam version. Same with GamersGate.

There probably eventually will be a patch for the Steam versions of TS12 so don't bin it just yet, fully patched TS12, N3V version, is pretty good. Just trains have digital downloads of TS12 and 2010 which are fully patchable.

I have been trying to follow steam for a while. I get the inpression they will not be doing a patch for a long time, if at all. (I have both steam and direct from auran versions of this sim in TS12) I do remember there being a broken session in the mojave map that has yet to be resolved involving couplers breaking no matter what the user tried. (I couldn'd find the thread off hand, but it does exist somewhere in this forum.) So, to the OP, if you are going to get another version of trainz, DON'T get it from steam, but get the version of your choice(IE '09, '10, '12...) It will give you a much better sim experience and you will have much better capability to update, upgrade, whatever.

Well, if you are willing to buy TS2010 or a new version of TS12 from N3V, now's the time. They're having an Easter sale that's 20% off any purchase, so it's $40 for the digital download or regular version, about $55 for the Anniversary Edition for TS12 and $24 for TS2010. TS2010 has a lot of great routes built in, about 30 or so.

Once again, thanks for all your help, but afraid I'm finally done with Trainz 12.

I drove the built-in 'elevated' city route earlier which was just one disappointment after another, first of all, the simulation of the brakes on the consist meant even the briefest of applications brought it to a sudden halt making regulating speed impossible, then the loading and unloading of passengers stopped working at about the fifth station, followed by the train simulating downhill physics on an clear incline (i.e. train speeding up at throttle setting 0, compounded by the brakes problem) and finally the adjecent track hovering about bogie height from the ground saw me heading straight for the 'exit' button.

Sorry for the moaning posts, but I really would have thought that Auran would have ensured that the built-in content would be of good, consistent quality, instead it feels like they've lazily pre-installed some buggy user content to make their no doubt technically brilliant simulator appear to be playable out of the box.

I would attempt to get a refund, however I'm all too aware of how futile that would be, maybe I should check out the trade descriptions act.

Having said all that, prior to this, and following some advice in this thread, I purchased TS2010 from JustTrains, so I'll keep my fingers crossed it's in better shape. I'm also coveting RailWorks 3: Train Simulator 2012, this is'nt the best place I know, but has anyone here had any experience with it?

As someone who owns railworks 3 aka train simulator 2012 its terrible. the phyics are not realistic and figuring out just how to place trains and build routes is impossible. There really is no other option out there.
