Playing Trainz on XBOX!?!?!?

Hello all,

I while ago, a computer person came to hook my laptop up to the internet. He said that it had too many programs on it, and I should play my simulators (Trainz) on an Xbox...

Is it just me, or is he a bit dumb (how else could I word this? :o )?

yes he was a fool
number of programs on a PC means nothing
number loading on startup now that is another matter

no way, that is not going to work!

that is a crazy idea, that console is meant for video games, not railroad simulators like trainz!:hehe:

I doubt an Xbox would have the power to run a simulator. An Xbox certainly doesn't have the controls either...

First off I wouldn't consider Trainz a simulator, in it's current form it's far from it. The closest thing your going to get as far as a consumer rail simulation goes is OpenBVE -

http://railsimroutes.net/blog/

or what is trying to be accomplished with the OpenRails project -

http://www.openrails.org/home.html

which by the way uses Microsoft XNA game framework and as the documentation states could easily be ported over to the XBOX 360 platform.

As far as a BVE type rail simulation goes the XBOX 360 or the PS3 are plenty powerful enough. Both platforms are already more than capable of running games that feature graphics that are far beyond what you see in Trainz.

As far as the controls are concerned just take a look at the racing wheels that are available for PS3 and XBOX 360, if there is demand it get's developed. The PS3 has had keyboard/mouse support for a while now.

That's just not true.
Both XBox360 and PS3 would have more than enough power to run something like Trainz, easily.
Even more so because they would be optimised for a specific chipset and GPU, without the added overhead of unneeded services and programs that you get with a PC.

An Xbox certainly doesn't have the controls either...
If Trainz was available on the XBox360 or PS3, you can be sure that there would be a controller addon like RailDriver for it.

It'll never happen though.
I don't think Auran are too fond of paying the licensing fees to Microsoft/Sony. :)

I can't see any other reason for them not to, and if they'd listened to us when we suggested it years ago, they'd be on their 3rd or 4th console version by now, and would probably have quite a following.

EDIT: djt posted while I was typing my post. We both say the same thing, and we're both right! :) :)

Smiley.

Absolutely right and it's the reason why the games for PS3 and XBOX 360 run as good as they do. It's amazing what a game developer can accomplish when they have a specific hardware spec that they are developing/optimizing a game for.

We evaluated this a long time ago (back in the early XBOX days) and decided against it. I'm not entirely sure of the final reasoning, but the two obvious ones that spring to mind now are:

* The XBOX didn't have much RAM. The 360 is better in this regard, although still very limited compared to a PC. The result is that we could probably do some very nice looking content, but not much of it at once.

* It would be an expensive task. For a small company like N3V, we'd come close to betting the farm on the success of a console version. If the console version wasn't successful, or if the success of the console version came at the expense of the PC version, the company might fail.

kind regards,

chris

With the route creation/editing features that exist in Trainz, the XBOX 360 platform wouldn't be very ideal. As a “in the cab” train simulator (similar to BVE) the XBOX 360 platform (or PS3) would be more than capable.

If the XBOX 360 can handle the excellent graphics that are seen in Forza 3 (content detail that far exceeds anything we've seen in Trainz) at 1920x1080 (1080p) resolution and still provide a consistent 60 fps I don't think it would have a hard time handling something like BVE.
