Planet Map Generator

Trainz Displacement Recolorer

Just to share...
Here's what my little Win32 application is doing...

This is the original Displacement#2 from Trainz

Here's with all Valleys (<128) raised to 128 and another image showing the "coastlines".

displacement02_-_NEW_FV_1CL.bmp

This is with the Valleys Inverted 75%, meaning the valleys are now 75% above 128

This is Valleys Inverted 50% and Mountains Lowered 25%

So, using the Planet Map Generator, I can adjust the map further to suit my needs.

That's really, really nice and slick. How do these look as terrain?

John

I didn't smooth the image first, but they looked good. I've been working on a 4096² image for a 28² board layout. I'll post results tomorrow.

I'm finding if I stick with the idea of having a pixel for every point, I get the desired results. The other problem is, if I turn up the threshold too high, the difference between one color and the next is 2.5m. So I then tinkered with setting 0 as ground level and I got a better slope. It's all a work in progress.

OK, so I made a 1024x1024 image with Planet Map Generator. Map# 4215573060943. Base: .015. All other settings default.

Here's the result
PMG1.bmp

I Then loaded it in my Trainz Displacement Recolorer, did some tweaking and got these...
TDRMap.bmp
TDRMapCL.bmp

Over 7 boards square, with full threshold I got this

TDR2.jpg
TDR3.jpg

You can also bring the image into Gimp, Paint.net or Photoshop and apply some more smoothing to it before using it in Trainz. That might smooth out the surface more.

I only used two of 12 levels of smoothing. I don't think it's too jagged, especially with the threshold all the way up. Another feature of my TDR is being able to change the floor level. So if I need to, I can set it to 8 and have 248 levels of detail. It's still a work in progress. Keep the feedback coming. I also started a thread HERE specifically covering my TDR.
