PEV's Tools

Recently while on holiday in another county, a friend showed me that if you have an asset Open for Edit to repair, if you highlight it, then right click, on the drop down menu that comes up there is an option Open with... [or similar] which if clicked again, will bring up a further sub menu with the selection of PEV's tools enabling you to select the one you want to use from inside Content Manager. I am fully patched up to 61388 as he is but I'm unable to bring up the selection of PEVs tools from a sub menu like this in Content Manager and always have to go to a desk to shortcut to open the one I want. While I have shortcuts on the desk top my originals are help in a Folder labelled PEVSOFT in my Program Files [x86] directory.
Would someone be kind enough to explain to me what I need to do or change to fix it so that I can open PEVs tools from inside Content Manager. Thanks

In each of Pev's tools, if you open them from the desktop shortcut, there is a menu item which says "Set Up". Click on this and the "Open with" option and it will ask you through an Explorer style form to select the install folder for each of your installs (I think only from 2009 and up). Navigate to each of your Trainz installs in turn and select the folder.

You will have to do this for each of Pev's tools individually, and this inserts a batch file into the Bin/CMP Data folder and gives the "Open with..." option in the R-click menu in CMP.

Folder should look something like this
X:\Trainz Simulator 12\bin\CMPData\tools\OpenWith
AssetX.exe
AssetX.ini
Images2TGA.bat
PM2IM.bat
QuickShadows.bat
TrainCar_Viewer.bat

Hope this sheds a little more light

Oops, looks like I was beaten to it by others.

From PEV Mesh Viewer's Help file under the topic of "Setup";

Setup
Right Click Menu ........... Trainz Mesh Viewer

TS2009, TS2010, and TS12 support "Open With" in Content Manager. The traincar viewing mode of Trainz Mesh Viewer is designed to work from Open With.

When executed for the very first time the program will attempt to load Open With macros into each Trainz installation.(TS2009 onwards)

The program will look for Trainz installations in the default locations. If it can't find any one of these versions, a find directory dialog will open asking the user to locate a particular Trainz version. if you don't have that version, press cancel in the find directory dialog, otherwise find the main application folder
eg ..program files\auran\TS2009.

A macro named TrainCar_Viewer.bat will be loaded in the Content Manager OpenWith folder.

This setup procedure can be executed at any time by selecting menu Setup / Open With.

Please note that the openwith macros are not removed when the Trainz Mesh Viewer program is un-installed.

Sorry guys. What am I missing? This is what I get after following the steps in post #3. I've tried with mesh viewer and quickshadows with the same result. I'm using TS2010. I've also followed the script "if you don't have TS2009 press "cancel" with no success.

When it asks about TS2009, just press "cancel" because you don't have that, and it should then move straight on to ask about TS2010. Browse to that TS2010 folder, press OK, then it will continue and ask about TS12 - which you also don't have - so again press "cancel". That should do it for Mesh Viewer.

You need to repeat the same process with the other PEV tools separately.

Thanks Deane but I still get the "file not found" error when I hit cancel. Just like the 2nd pic in my previous post. I must be doing something wrong. I'm using TS 20120 Build 49933 with CM 3.3.

Can I confirm what version of Mesh Viewer (which appears to be the problem tool for you) you are using? I can then check it on mine and liaise with PEV if needed.

I'm using version 2.25 on a new Windows 8.1 machine. TS2010 seems to performing great but I've seen a few quirky things with PEVs tools. I thought maybe I didn't have PEVs tools configured correctly. I used them all with no issues on my old Vista TS2010 install.

That will assist me in helping to identifying the issue. I haven't got Windows 8.1 though but I do have Windows 7 SP1. I do need to verify though that the tool is running as administrator though - it should be if it's using the current installer from my tutorial site.

If needs be though, I can advise on how to manually create the batch files.

Sorry Shane. Are you asking if I'm running PEVs tools as administrator? I'm not sure. I did download them from your site though about a month ago.

They should be running as administrator in that case (you should get a Yes/No (User Account Control) box when you launch the tool). At the moment I'm downloading a copy from my site to test it and will make a decision from there.

Shane

I don't get the Yes/No User Account Control box. I believe I configured Windows not to ask or run everything as administrator if I remember correctly.

OK - that may have a bearing on things. I'm currently in the process of testing Mesh Viewer 2 so I will be able to tell you if it's your system or whether there's a problem with the program.

I've just finished testing the tool. I didn't get any errors, however I did notice something I need to check with PEV regarding the messages (it stated that the OpenWith macro was loaded even when Cancel is clicked).

Kenneth & Dinorius Redundicus: Thanks, I seem t have some success. I followed your method and it worked. However for others trying to follow it, the following may be useful.
I have each of PEVs tools set up as open as Administrator and as mentioned each has to be done separately. Before I started I opened Ts12 Content Manager then as you go to 'set up' on one of PEV's tools then and 'Open with' it will bring up a window listing game selection e.g 2009 so press Cancel. Then it will add to 2010 so press cancel again then it will move to 2012. This is the one I wanted so on the other window, scrolled to C:/N3V Games/ Ts12 [as mine is set up] then click on and open TS 12 so that all the folders are showing beneath it. If I don't open it like that, it didn't work.
Then hit OK. Then the window should close of its own accord, an indication that all is well so then go to CM and check and it should be there.

However I could not get Soundz into the list and Mesh viewer comes up as Train car viewer so I dont know if its going t be any use when fixing errors to look at meshes on other non train car assets.
Any comment on that Shane? Cheers

To get 'Open with' Trainz soundz into te CM window, after you click on/open Ts12 as in post 17, scroll to userdata and click on that before you hit OK
Soundz then will also appear in the 'open with' menu.
Cheers

I do remember reading a post further up regarding Mesh Viewer appearing as Train Car Viewer.

As for Soundz, I will need to check that one, as it may not have Open With facilities (unless it's stated on the download page for it).
