Payware: My #1 complaint

Also a membership for GMax/3DSMax costs $300+ so the entire team has that expense and much more, so you're lucky JR makes them at such a low price.

As stated by retro gmax is free 3ds max 2009 can be had new for 160 bucks now and less used...

Having the determination to learn how to use either.... PRICELESS...

Oh, well my mistake, my 2nd cousin is in college and is studying 2D/3D modeling for video games or movies and animation. He has a modeling program that costs a lot of money and I though he said something about 3DSMax costing $300+, or so I thought. Anyway it doesn't matter. (No he will not do any train models for free because he doesn't know how to program it and his passion is zombies/manga.)

Sometimes I find payware a little greedy because I know many trainz content creators who make excellent content and just upload it to the download station.
ABSOULOUTELY NO OFFENSE MEANT! THIS IS JUST AN OPINION!

Are you also saying you find it greedy to buy cheese from the supermarket??

Jamie

Then why is it greedy to make money from something that can take hundreds of hours to build??

I have bought quite a lot of payware, mostly from only a couple different creators. The locos they make are so good, and look so much more realistic that I can't bear some of the, er, less professional looking content.

This is one way of looking at it: I buy their payware because I really like their work and want them to keep making it. If I give them money they will be encouraged to keep going, who knows perhaps one day someone could even make a living out of it - but I doubt it. $10 for a loco that would take me probably hundreds of hours to make - and I value my time much more than $10 per hour - it's a bargain.

And yes, I realise how lucky I am that I can afford to buy virtual trains when some folks can't even afford food for the table.

What’s up with that?

So let me make sure I understand - you think payware creators are greedy but you use the banner of a payware site on your posts. What’s up with that?

The greed for money is what drives the world, it is a good greed when it remains bound to the laws of the nations. The greed for power destroys practically everything and everyone it touches.

You callin' for a revolution colhad? :p

DAVIE!! :)

Still got that 44 class then? see that wasnt free.. it cost me a whole 109 dollars.. and 25 dollars postage and the poor thing likely never seen rails in its life..

I seen these arguments come up over the years many many times,
what ive come to understand is.. all in all.. the occasional person has eyes for something that they dont want to pay for.. in the real world thats called stealing.. jealousy or perhaps a more.. relevent thing for the younger padawan who started this thread...

go play gothic 2 on the PC or 3...maybe even good old morrowind!..

go into a shop in any town you happen to find.. perhaps even take a silt strider!...greet the friendly shop keeper..but whats this...?.. you see a nice thing you want?..... oh.. its 5gp :(

you dont have to pay for it.. just grab it.. why should you have to pay!

just dont mind the very somewhat annoyed shop keepers and guards that follow... :p

case in point.. people arnt generally happy to give away their work..
such things should be considered more oftern than they actually are

All I will add is to say if a person creates something it is his property. It is entirely up to him what he does with his own property within reason. They may keep it for their own use or enjoyment. They could give it to somebody else or any number of people. They could also sell it if they want to. The point is they can do whatever they want to with their property under the constraints of the law. They are cannot be forced to give it to you or anybody else. And neither you or anybody else can be forced to buy it. And that is how it should be in a free society. Now to climb off my soap box:)

Sorry

No need to argue with me, I am not saying that I hate payware creators, and I don't want anything that I have said to be offensive. It is just an opinion and I do not mean any harm.

Many content creators create trains or routes that take months to build and allow people to download them for free, just like Kenichiro-San.

Amazing....

(I'm 16 & broke), but WHY MUST WE PAY FOR TRAINZ CONTENT!? Who agrees that payware should be made free?

Let me explain something....99% of Trainz content made for all versions of Trainz is "FREE" A very minuscule amount (about 1%) is not free. You have no idea how much time is spent on models that end up being free. Months, years. I spent a year and a half for my first steam locomotive model and it's free. I pulled dozens of all nighters trying to get it done quickly but I never asked for a cent. Not everyone has all day to just make models for you to mooch off of and play with.

How about you spend years of your life learning how to design, create and animate models and try making "ONE" little model and see how easily you just let it go and give it away. So until you decide to put in a fraction of the work all these content creators do on a daily basis, try to have a little respect for the efforts they put in!

The thread that wouldn't die!

Is there a doctor in the house to slap a "Do not resuscitate" note on this patient?

if you were a payware content creator you wont say this as you dont know creating a detailed content is a real hard pain in ass
and this pain can only be observed by payware creators
i salute payware content creator for their wonderful creation and they have full right to get reward for thier work

You might also consider that some N3V policies are what made some creators to go the payware route. I'm one of them.

Mike

The thing about payware is: Sooner or later everyone will jump on the bandwagon, and be charging money for things, just like freeware music sites ... who now charge money for songs.

And soon everybody who creates a route: (like a Horseshoe Curve route), will want to be paid money for their work.

I will always work for free (for something I love, Trainz) ... because it brings a smile to everyone.

And I am working on a whopper of a freebee !

Being 18, I know many of my peers who feel everything can be handed to them, even money, and as far as I am concerned, there were just handed their High School Diplomas when we all graduated. (I know many people who just BSed their way though school)

Back in high school I raised lambs for the FFA. My closest friends who were in FFA also raised large animals. When the time came, we took our animals to the county fair and entered them in the market and showmanship shows. Now sometimes we'd win our shows, sometimes we did not, but we all knew that whatever the outcome we did our best and we took pride in our work. At the end of fair we sold our animals in the auction and however much money we received was valued because of the months of work before hand it took to prepare for fair. And we didn't just blow the money on the latest stuff like most people who sold their animals, no we put our money in savings so we could use it to buy our vehicles and help pay for school. And that was that. We did that for all four years of high school.

Now there were a few people who also went through FFA with us who never went to the barns to work with their animals, never show up to practice and at fair they manage to win 1st in Showmanship and when they sell their animal at auction they make more money because they had one 1st. That raises their ego and they think they are the best in the world. Then the next year they'd boast to all the new freshman about how good they are and how they (the freshman) should listen to them about how to raise an animal. My friends and I usually had to set the freshman straight and explain the right way of doing things.

I guess what I'm saying is there are a lot of young people my age and younger who could use a lesson or two about hard work and the value of it.

Sites like Jointed Rail & RRMods have some great freeware, true, but their payware is fantastic! Not that I've used payware (I'm 16 & broke), but WHY MUST WE PAY FOR TRAINZ CONTENT!? Wasn't it enough to pay for the built-in content itself?! I mean, really! Their locomotives are some of the best looking & could certainly fill gaps in my operations-based aspiration! But I have to settle for staring at pictures of the payware content or (in Jointed Rail's case) waiting until they "retire" (discontinued) and made freeware. Who agrees that payware should be made free?
