Payware: My #1 complaint

I try not to talk bad about payware... but I (used to) hate it.

Silly concept to me. Nothing can change that about me. People put so much work into these creations, and wish for money. They actually get a business going. Good for them. However, what if it was free? HOW MUCH of a saint would you look if you made payware quality and released it... for free? What if JR just kept making all their content, but we saw it announced in the freeware section instead? How many people would LOVE them for that? More than half the community. Given. However, this is the real world. People use things that need money. Bills, Food, New Tech, etc. etc. The list goes on. When it comes down to it, money makes things work. To some, it's a job. To some, it's extra cash. To me, it's fine. I don't complain openly like this because I understand. People need money. Times are hard. I'm there. I have a terrible computer, and TRS2006 and there's NOTHING I can do about it because I have no money. IF I COULD, I WOULD do what JR and RRMods are doing... even though it's out of my reach.

Payware... what do I hate? I hate IT. Not the creators. Don't take offense, and don't get mad. It's just one 15 year old's opinion. ;) If I was to spend 15 dollars on a locomotive. It's going to be something I can hold. That's my point of view now.

...This is all baby poo. True, I have more sedimental value for model railroads, no way should it have influenced my outlook on payware. See my newer post...

Cheers,
Joshua

and another thing....

When i was a young man, all we had for a modeling possibility was model railroads.

Many of the engine models you can get for this program would take 100 times as much money to buy in HO scale, and probably not have all the loving detail that Trainz models do.

Back then, I would have been lucky to get a whole dollar for a mowed lawn, and the cheapest HO engine I could find at the time was a Bachmann F7 at $12.

Today, a mowed lawn usually gets $10 or $15 for a small lawn, and that buys 2 or 3 trains models, if you shop carefully.

Between lawns and a paper route (3 cents per delivered paper, minus $1 for any houses you missed), I managed to put together over $600 worth of HO railway in 3 years.

This is not a suggestion for you to follow--at this point, there have been plenty of those. This was simply to put the cost of Trainz into the perspective from which us old-timers view it. In other words, to us, whether we can afford it or not, Trainz is dirt cheap :D

What is distasteful about someone wanting to get paid for hundreds of hours of work? I really don't understand that logic.

Mike

Hi Mike,

I have read and reread Joshua's post.

While perhaps he could have used another word, what I see in his post is frustration in not having the cash to purchase software, payware, etc.,etc.

We do not know the reason for his anguish about lack of cash, and it is none of our business.

I just see a young man who wants more in Trainz, but at the moment can not afford it at this time.

Joshua's posts in the past have shown him to be intelligent and not complain about things.

To Joshua..... I know well the area where you live. Not really sure if that area has been hard hit by the current economic situation. From 1992 to 1997 I lived in the town of Crete...up the road from you. My work was located in the little town of Grant Park, just North of you.

I hope that things improve for you and that you can get the things you want in the near future.

Regards,
Ron

Ron
I understand his anquish and he probably could have used a better word. He probably is frustrated with not being able to purchase what he'd like to have, but there's lots of things that I'd like to have that I can't afford either. I just accept the fact and try to figure out a way to achieve my goal. That's part of the maturing process and he'll get there. I'm just not sure that referring to payware creators with disgust is the way to get there.

Mike

LOVE as payment...

Well Joshua, it sounds as though you want gifts from those who work hard to produce content and find it distasteful that they won’t accept LOVE from you as payment. Interesting!

I just sat here, and wrote a 3 paragraph post... ready to explain my entire case. I deleted it though. Because Ron helped realize why that previous post came out at udder madness.

I don't want to get everything. I've always appreciated something earned. I just had a flashback to about 2 years ago. I had just earned enough money from just birthday cards that I hadn't spent for a new pack of CSX Yn3 SD45-2s for RRMods. Haha, I rode my bike all the way from my house to the Walgreens to pick up a Pre-Paid Visa for the locomotive pack. You know Ron, there's a reason I don't complain. If I do, I usually take it back. I really do. I take that entire post back. My entire logic was that this Trainz Community used to be a freeware community, how much richer would it be if it was back to it's roots? However, I found my wording to be soo far off that I have even angered Mike. (sorry) Honestly, I have to change my mind about that post. I don't think it's fair for Trainz to be entirely free. Where's the kid coming home after a long ride to purchase payware and feel accomplished and like he earned it? I do take it back. Payware offers something I never thought about in a railroad community... Balance. I was always thinking richer in content. Contributing to the community as a whole... etc, etc. I now understand that having something for younger ones to work for it good. Totally changed my perspective. So, to sum things up, I used to ( years ago ) think the whole idea of creating content was to contribute to the Trainz community and that it was a bit over the top to charge money for something I used to feel was conceived to be contributed anyway. Over time, I began to realize it's to get the things you need. Money is an important asset in everyone's life. I slowly learned how hard it is to make things. My last post, finally, was me trying to sort out a solid opinion I agreed with... I wanted to complain, because I that's how I thought of it... but I conflicted with myself because I know the value of money... and how much everyone needs it and is hurting. That lead me to doubt myself while writing the "complaint" I tried to make myself sound justified, but that's impossible on my old opinion. So, my new outlook... Payware is acceptable. I feel almost ashamed to be named someone who is frustrated with anguish that they can't get what they want. That is not how I want myself to be. Nor am I.

Wow, I'm a confusing guy. HAHA. It's good to laugh at yourself sometimes. :D

Dave,
Only you would be the source of comic relieve to me by proving me in the simplest of ways why I just posted an idiotic post.

Ron,
I really do appreciate that you came forth to try to protect my reputation. That was a very nice thing for you to do.

With that outlook. I completely disagree with the Original post. Why does it cost more? Because that's how you pay the bills. Trainz is sold by the millions. They get so much off of Trainz. JR is sold by... whoever decides they can afford their products. It's completely justified after all... isn't it?

Cheers,
Joshua

I'm sorry if I gave you the wrong impression. You didn't upset me. You seem like an intelligent young person and I found your choice of words a little out of place. I too, at one time, created content and put it on the DLS for free because I wanted to contribute to the community.

I enjoyed the creation process and just wanted everyone to enjoy my modest attempts. It was the support policies of N3V last year that changed me to payware. The other was their blatant offering of my content for others to modify without my approval and reupload to the DLS. It was as if it wasn't my property anymore. No where, in my opinion, did I give them the authority to do that, but they disagree.

My only recourse to keep total control of my content was to put my content on my own site and a site costs money. Believe me, I'm not getting rich on this payware. Some months, I just barely make enough to keep my site up and running. If it ever gets to the point that it doesn't make me enough to keep it running, then the site will disappear and so will my content because I have absolutely no intention of putting any content on the DLS ever again unless N3V changes some of their policies and I seriously doubt that's going to happen. I regret that it has to be this way since I really like sharing my modest contributions with the community, but I won't underwrite N3V's endeavors when I disagree with what they're doing with legacy content.

So, I apologize if I made you think that I was upset with you, because I'm not. Best of luck to you.

Mike

OK, I'm the OP & I see fit to respond to all of your comments. First off, even if I have cash on hand, how do I use it? I don't have a PayPal account or a credit card, just actual bills & coins. Do I just deposit the money into my computer like a claw machine? Also, we recently switched to AT&T U-Verse from Comcast, believing cost, DVR & additional channels a good reason. We didn't count on reliability issues & were without TV & internet for 2 days! As such, we no longer have access to SmartZone Communication Center. It always auto-filled the password. Now I don't know the password to our AT&T U-Verse email. My parents refuse to give it to me because they don't want me to give away our password to potential trollers & hackers. This also bars me from joining anymore forums or Fanfiction.net. I know for a fact they always email you the CDP for the payware asset. What should I do?

If your parents have a credit card or PayPal account, then have you asked if they could purchase some payware for you using your money? If the cash that you have is your own, and all that they would need to do is just put that cash onto their credit card, PayPal account, or whatever and then buy it for you, then I do not really see anything wrong with that, unless they are cautious about giving their identity to others, but buying stuff on eBay or Craigslist is probably more dangerous than buying from JointedRail. ;) It seems many community members have done business with JointedRail, so I see not why they could not be considered a trustworthy seller. Likely similar with some other payware sellers around here. Hopefully their distrust in you with the email password, etc., will not prevent them from doing this for you. :n:

The Auran Shop started accepting Rixty as a payment option recently (see this announcement). Some JointedRail payware is apparently available there. Maybe there is a chance that Rixty would be okay in your parents' minds if the above suggestion fails.

Regards,

Retro.
