Payware: My #1 complaint

Sites like Jointed Rail & RRMods have some great freeware, true, but their payware is fantastic! Not that I've used payware (I'm 16 & broke), but WHY MUST WE PAY FOR TRAINZ CONTENT!? Wasn't it enough to pay for the built-in content itself?! I mean, really! Their locomotives are some of the best looking & could certainly fill gaps in my operations-based aspiration! But I have to settle for staring at pictures of the payware content or (in Jointed Rail's case) waiting until they "retire" (discontinued) and made freeware. Who agrees that payware should be made free?

I seriously doubt that payware will suddenly become freeware.

The reason is costs and time spent by the developers of the content - bear in mind it can take months or even years for such content to be created, and the developers are being reasonable in making it payware.

The only suggestion is to look on the Download Station for something similar, or a third-party site.

It takes a very long time to create content such as the stuff you will find at those sites. Why shouldn't the creator be paid for countless hours of work and research? If you owned a business would you want to give everything away for free? I think both us and RRmods have a vast selection of high quality freeware. If you want something, just earn some extra money and buy it. I got a job when I was 13 because I wanted a new PC, worked all summer mowing lawns to pay for it. I certainly appreciated the PC a whole lot more knowing I had to bust my tail to earn it. This stuff isn't created overnight. There are costs which will vary from creator to creator to maintain and host a website as well as maintain it. Does the creator not deserved to be paid for all the time and effort it takes to produce this stuff? Will you come over to my house and mow my lawn all summer for free? If so feel free to PM me, I hate cutting the grass....

I don't quite know how to respond to this, but here goes:

Nobody is forcing you to buy payware. If you want to wait until they are available as freeware then by all means go ahead. My suggestion would be to give content creation a try and do it yourself. You could also begin easily by simply re-skinning a loco to more what you are looking for.

Once that gets old, go ahead and get a copy of gMax or Blender and do some creating on your own.

Payware is payware because, usually, many hours are put into a creation. The decision to make a given model payware can be easy or it can be hard. When we created the Darjeeling route, we did some desultory debating on whether or not to make it payware. We decided against it. This decision was made easily because we wanted to make a contribution to the community.

So, go ahead and jump into the creativity pool. The water's fine.

Let me guess you think music should be given to you too. You bought the mp3 player why isn't it free to fill? What about my car I bought that... Why should I have to pay to put gas in it?

Just a slight correction.... you did NOT pay for the built-in content....you paid for a license to use the Trainz software.

Since none of us know if the OP has any physical limitations, it is somewhat unfair to tell him to get a job.

In today's economy, it is well known (or should be) that teen and young adults face a serious lack of jobs in today's market, so that may also be an impediment to his working at this time.

So, the best alternative may be to use the JR or other freeware or the DLS until some funds become available.

Regards,

Most of the built in content wasn't commissioned, the content creators didn't get paid for it.

Some content creators create because its a hobby, others see it as a job either full time or part time. Some start as a hobby then lose their job or some such and try to survive by selling some payware.

Does it pay? One or two people make some cash out of it but not many. It really can take more than a year sometimes to create something, the pay back in terms of $ per hour is often much less than minimum wage.

Customers are demanding, why doesn't it work under version whatever. For payware you need to licence textures sometimes, research material needs to be paid for, software needs to be purchased etc.

Have a dig around on the DLS or TPR there is plenty of free assets available. Trainz actually has less payware than many other SIMS simply because the hobbyists have built such high quality freeware.

Have a look at Blender and see what the learning curve is on this stuff, its quite high.

Ed is right. It's called capitalism and the free market place. By the way, don't expect to wait around to see my my payware eventually becoming freeware....that ain't happening. I have plenty of freeware on the DLS, but making something free to some after others have had to pay for it just isn't in my plans. When I retire something, it's going to be retired permanantly.

Now go mow Mike's lawn and let me know how that works out.

Regards,

This is very true. I lived in an area that didn't have many options for work as well, that's where the car washing and lawn mowing came into play. If you do have physical limitations, then allow me to apologize. Didn't quite think of that.... I think my point was that sometimes you have to work hard to get what you want.

@Mike ;) In all fairness I have a rock yard now... LOL I'm quickly finding out I would rather mow the grass vs. weed the rocks.

Thanks,

Mike

If I had the bucks I'd replace the whole 8000 square feet with astroturf and be done with it.

As for the question, "WHY MUST WE PAY FOR TRAINZ CONTENT!?" the answer is - I don't. I can't afford it either (lost my life savings in a bad business investment, can't get a job anymore due to old age crippling effects from falling off ladders, roofs, catwalks, scaffolding, and helicopters for 40 years), so I do without it, plenty of freeware to keep me busy.

I have never seen any person born with a tag on the toe stating they have a free ride in life ,
you must first help your self by getting a job to pay your way in life ,

don't stand on a stage at 16 years old and say i want free stuff ,,,,
thats a joke you are only fooling yourself

life has the ability to give and take ten fold either way
so before you take from the world you must first give to it

as stated before content manager has a few hundred GB of free assets that people have made waiting for you to come alone and use it free without question or a thank you in return

respect is one of the greatest door openers you could ever find in life
you must give respect before you get it

you do not have mine yet however it is there waiting
steve

I don't. I can't afford it either

I can understand that. This is the reason for the sales, Item of the week and Payware retirement. We also do some contests as well. Mainly the payware retirement is just for this reason. No reason to remove it all together, let others enjoy it. I think we try to make it a fair balance. Plus our freeware side keeps getting bigger, and we strive to maintain the same quality on our freeware as we do on our payware. As far as the astro turf... I LOVE that idea. Either that or concrete the whole place and I can paint green where I want grass.... ;) Our freeware side is about to get bigger too... so keep an eye out.

Oh and one more thing, falling out of a helicopter can't be good... What is it you used to do? :p

Mike

16 and broke, maybe a partime job could be the holy grail
seriously most payware is 5to10 bucks a piece
chuck a bit of loose change into a bucket and you will be surprised how much you'll accumulate

cheers,
patchy

"Off of", not "out of" fortunately. Five years in a US Navy heavy antisubmarine helicopter squadron I managed to fall off the roof of four Sikorsky SH-3Ds, twice due to my own clumsiness, twice in the same hour on the flight deck of the USS Independence due to high winds and heavy seas, wasn't my own silly fault then. Civilian life I was an electrician, occupational hazard to get zapped and knocked off stuff. When you're 30 you take a couple aspirin and shrug it off, at 40 you take the rest of the day off and limp around for a week, at 50 it takes a year to recover. Then one day you wake up feeling every bone you ever broke complaining. :'( Getting old is not for sissies, you gotta be tough, I guess. :hehe:

I remember my first job, at 14, picking strawberries under the hot sun for 4 hours a day. Ten cents a carton. Nightmare.
But the money was well spent on Minitanks. I still have some, forty years later.

Who agrees that payware should be made free?

We all agree with you, but, unfortunately young man, it 'aint going to happen, as per the explanations given.

I take it that you may still be at school, as has already been suggested, try and get some part time work, or, do some chores for your family and friends and earn a bit of pocket money, if you're able to, then you can afford a few locos and whatnot from our wonderful Payware vendors.
If not, then I'm afraid you'll have to wait until you're in fulltime work, then, with your wages you can buy as much as you like, I'm sure that Joe and Mike and the boys will look forward to your orders.....

Cheerz. ex-railwayman.

Someone has made a constructive point in that most payware is in fact cheap and is not completely out of range of even youngsters on limited pocket money. Most youngsters will put something aside for example if they are after some music cd or whatever and this here is a hobby or interest too. It wouldn't take that long to have the wherewithall to purchase an item. So i think the 'broke' bit is stretching things a wee bit.
