Organising Assets

Hi

Notwithstanding the good database filters that can be applied in CM2 I am finding it increasingly difficult to find assets I want to use in Surveyor. This is heightened by the many assets that don't come with an accompanying screen-shot icon. Add to this the large number of assets that are named in a language, foreign to me, by our many non English speaking creators. This must be even more frustrating for our non-English speaking friends using Trainz where most of the assets are English language based.

I am looking to find a way to edit the asset database "live" from within Surveyor. My thoughts are that I write a user interface for an assets database record that 'pops up' as an editable text editor so that I can write a description that suits me, if necessary change the name to a phrase that will identify the asset to me and also allow me to categorise it using "keywords" to aid my search efforts. In addition I would like to 'grab' a screen image of the asset and convert it automatically to an icon that can be viewed in CM2.

To enact this function ideally I would right click the asset in surveyor whilst the "?" is the active control selected.

At the moment I try to do this editing on downloading assets but for a variety of reasons this doesn't always happen.

On the face of it this seems a project fraught with problems. Before I take on the impossible could anybody give me some advice on the pitfalls I'm likely to encounter. Any advice other than "Don't even try! :hehe:" would be gratefully accepted.

At the moment, the best way I can think of to approximate editing the asset database live, is to start CM (in TRS 2006) or CM2 (in 2009) and start TRS from within CM or CM2. This allows one while using Surveyor, to switch to content manager by means of [Alt]-[Tab]. Once in CM, one can open an asset for edit, and resave it under a "friendlier" name.

Personally, I think Auran needs to step up and write some kind of organizational structure into the asset lists in Surveyor. At the very least it would be helpful to be able to only show locomotives, or only show trees, or only show buildings. That would make building routes a lot more user-friendly, because we'd only have to search through a specific category instead of the entire list.

Hi NS

Alt+Tab was my first idea and ideal for what I want but I afraid that CM2 (2009) isn't running in the background once you enter Surveyor from CM2.

Hi toroca
2009 CM2 and Surveyor have exactly the filters you want plus you can enhance those with saving your own searchable keywords in CM2.

My fault, that's correct, but this is a case where I didn't write what I meant to. Here's what I do:

1.) I open a window, any window either a browser, GIMP, or even just a "my computer" window.

2) I open the TS 2009 launcher, and select "Content".

3) I open a new instance of the TS 2009 launcher, and select "start", from which I start Surveyor.

Now I can [Alt]-[Tab] between CM2 and surveyor. But you are quite correct that if you launch surveyor from CM2, you cannot [Alt]-[Tab] back to CM2.

Thanks NS it's been a few years now since I did any serious software authoring and I wasn't looking forward to it. That will do just what I want. Cheers

Moin,

In TS 09 you can use the picklist for that. While in surveyor drag the item you want in the picklist.
In CM2 open the picklist, choose "view in main window" and you have all together and can rename what you want. Save it to the picklist again and use it later in surveyor...:)

Where exactly are those filters then? The only search option I see in Surveyor is to search by name, and I don't often KNOW the names of things I want, particularly in the Objects section.

Moin,

Follow the numbers in the 1. Pic to get the same filters then in CM2:
