mango madness
g'day all,
have been building a route using transdem
decided to build it in two sections
i've completed the first half about 80kms total
second section is approx same distance
do i merge the two and keep plowing along or do i build the second section and merge later
one of my biggest concern is i'm not going to get the same texurtering from the the merge point on
the two sections combined will come out about 100mgbs which i don't think would be a problem as i got larger routes
the route wil be uploaded but bear in mind it's only the map file that gets uploaded

cheers,
patchy

Were it me I'd just not texture about half of the each of the two baseboard sections where the merge will join them.

Once I'd merged the two routes I'd apply the texturing to the untextured section.

Hi Patchy

First question, what system do you use, 32bit or 64bit as this has a bearing on what size routes you can merge.

Personally, I would merge first before doing any textures and then just continue afterwards. On a 32bit system, you can only edit a route of approx 750MB, on a 64bit system, you can work with a route of up to 1.7GB in surveyor.

During the merge, if it falls over on you, just break the map you want to merge into smaller chunks, say split it down the middle and that should work.

Hope that helps you out. If you still having problems, let me know and I will see what and where I can help you.

Regards
Peter

When I do a big route - Clovis, EK, EVWR etc I always start with a DEM of the full complete route with all the components merged. This is the 'master' and it is the ONLY copy of the route I ever work on.

When I want to release a completed bit I delete all the untextured boards, but this now becomes ONLY the released route. All further work gets done back on the master. That way I am always working onwards from the 'last bit' I worked on.

Although the style of the route (hopefully) improves as I go along, the changes are gradual and you don't get that blinding here's-where-it-changes line...

Sorry Peter, but have you any idea how big a route would be to run anywhere near 750Mb (let alone 1.7Gb)? Whether they could be merged or not is so close to irrelevant that it just doesn't matter! One person - one lifetime would not do it justice!

I have merged route so far beyond any possibility of completion on a Win7/TRS04 system that 32/64 bit just doesn't matter...

Yes I do Andy.

The current route I am working when it was first imported into TS12 and before I chopped off a lot of excess boards ran close to 600MB.

Have got in down to 397MB now. I should finish by mid next year.

When I am working on a huge route (like the DHR) I attach what I call a 'palette board'. This extra board sits off to the side and contains samples of the textures I use on the route. When I take up another section of the route, I detach the 'palette board' as a stand-alone route. Then, after loading the new portion, I merge with the 'palette board' and continue. That way, you keep using the same textures.

The DHR was built by doing the whole route in DEM and then chopping it up into around 20 little portions which were taken by the worker bees for building. Once a portion was complete, I merged it with the 'master' route.

As you can see, techniques vary.
