Once Again, Auran Denies Access?

I used to work at a place that had gigantic computer systems (even a Cray XMP) and maintainence was done by the 3rd shift on Monday mornings. I doubt they have a 3rd shift but Monday morning in down-under-land would be Sunday morning and afternoon here I believe so the maintainence idea has legs.

Most (online) gaming companies do their maintenance on tuesdays or thursdays...

That said, avoiding the days when there's nothing else to play might be a good idea.

Codemasters do their maintenance between about 9am and 1pm (GMT/BST) each tuesday, which avoids bothering people that are normally at work.

WoW on the other hand can afford to hire additional staff, and their maintenance is usually 4am to 7am (PST for US servers, GMT for european) every tuesday.

EVE takes a more forceful approach and performs maintenance every day at noon to 1pm GMT. The game being unavailable for an hour a day isn't too bad once you get used to it.

The idea of 'prevantative' maintenance (ie, reboot of the servers, vacuum (yes, that IS a technical term) the databases etc) isn't a bad one at all. Given the current reliability of the servers rebooting them on friday to at least reduce the risk of them crashing over the weekend would be a start.

I was referring to Pratt & Whitney Aircrafts R&D facility in West Palm Beach, Fl. I worked in the test area as an instrumentation tech for 15 years. 3rd shift on Monday (midnight to 7 AM) did the computer maint because the stand crews did thier maint at the same time so little interferrence occured. They didn't like running gazillion dollar engines without the computers on line.

Just a question since I do not know how the Trainz MP will work.

How will... (if at all)... the DLS/CM... or....Plant Auran servers going down for backups and/or maintenance impact the MP experience?

Have fun,:)

No need for that .................. it's an intermittent problem.

Try logging out and back in again on CM not the DLS web page.

Just because it is working for you doesn't mean it is for everyone, depends on the routing for a start.

I can assure you that at the time of posting, here they were down, contrary to some on here I do not go into panic mode before assuming anything.

Anyway it's now back up.

I asked you sir, are you calling me a liar.

If you are, then i demand satisfaction.

It makes me wonder... Several times every week, someone starts a thread complaining that DLS doesn't work. I can't recall one single time when I have not been able to download content from DLS, and I have been using Trainz on and of for almost ten years. How come?

A lot depends on the connections and traffic between you and the servers. Peer to peer transfers use about 80% of the available bandwidth on the Internet at the moment and if you make more bandwidth available the peer to peer transfer programs just fill the space.

My connection into the DLS is fairly good occasionally it doesn't connect but not often. Even if the servers are down you may still be able to access the DLS, a number of ISPs buffer pages of the Internet so they don't have to bring them in again, if you ISP does this to cut down on traffic then you might not even notice if the DLS server is actually physically down.

The Internet is a weird and wonderful place and it doesn't always work as you think it might do. We had one remote user who had a lot of difficulty connecting to send back data until we installed a UPS. It stablised the voltage going into the networking bit and computer and made everything more reliable.

Of course not my post was 40 odd minutes after yours and not a reply to you either. The server was down here at that time or shortly before.
More like you seem to be accusing me of being a liar however I am not indulging in your mind games.

Thank you for your most interesting input.

I used to be one of the techs that used to do this stuff back many years ago. I was responsible for computer operations 2nd and 3rd shift (swing shift) at a major life insurance company. We had 15 fileservers plus a Vax in-house plus two IBM mainframes located remotely. We did backups every night and disabled logins while the backups ran. Sometimes there were technical difficulties, which required more downtime. When this happened, everyone would call looking for the servers. Our responsiblity then was to do "damage" control to keep people from trying to connect even after the systems came up because we had to play catch-up on the operations cycle.

On holiday weekends we did a computer room shutdown to clean-up the room and perform hardware maintenance. This included rebooting the UPS system as well as replace or upgrade hard drives, memory cards, etc. in the systems.

Yes and neither am I. Although, why on earth is ANYONE keeping this thread alive if the auran database has decided to work again?
Eric

so that the youngsters can see that Internet connections are not 100% up all the time. If it doesn't connect right now this minute, take a deep breath, and try again. If it still doesn't connect, go do something else. You must have other things to do? If not, you've got bigger problems than just a failed connection.

Possibly, but i wasn't the one screaming like a big girl.

Because they couldn't access the DLS.

ROFL you do have a vivid imagination.

Lets get a few facts correct here, I couldn't care less if the DLS is working or not as I don't use it very often, I only checked it because of this thread. I make most of my own stuff so I don't need it.
