'Obsolete' sessions without a newer version

Learning... slowly!
After downloading the Leeds - Sheffield route by drivercol, I went to download some of the sessions by halfdan. After spending ages downloading the session <kuid2:267614:100073:3> 0800 Sheffield - Leeds (D1733) and then the required assets, it greyed itself out and marked itself as 'Installed, obsolete' and doesn't appear listed as a session in the session list in Trainz. All the other sessions by halfdan for this route are also marked as obsolete.

I'm confused; I thought assets were only listed as obsolete if there was a newer version to replace it - but there doesn't seem to be such a thing. To my knowledge the route is still a Trainz Classics 3 build so I can't understand why the accompanying sessions are obsoleted if the route isn't.

Can anyone explain this to me, or help me get a session working?

You apparently have selected a session that has been obsolete by a new session. You have effectively downloaded the newer session (as that is what TANE and TS12 do by default) so the session you had in mind is obsolete.

A route not being obsolete has nothing to do with a session being obsolete or not.

That makes sense, but the newer session doesn't seem to exist. I've tried searching using the same KUID but increased version number, I've tried searching for the author's content and I've tried searching by name. There just doesn't seem to be one and that's what I don't get.

Alex,

Go in to CM and highlight the session in question, and bring up the contextual menu. On the PC it's the right mouse-button, but I can't remember what it is on the Mac.

With the menu up, choose View Asset versions. This should open up another CM window and list all versions of the session. Anything that is installed and active will be bolder and black while the obsoletes will be that infamous pale grey.

You can then repeat the same process again on the dark-colored sessions and view their dependencies, and this will shed light on which route the sessions belong to.

What may have occurred is the sessions were updated but are now under another name, which can be confusing as it doesn't match the one that's already installed, however, the new session supersedes the original.

What he is saying is the session is not on the DLS nor does it appear under a search for halfdan but somehow it is appearing in CM for download.

Hi JCitron,

Thank you for your suggestion. I did as you suggested; it showed all the author's creations, and absolutely everything in the list was obsoleted and the KUID for that session went up to <kuid2:267614:100073:127> with :3 listed as Installed but Obsolete and the rest were just <unknown asset>. My only guess is that the updated session is now a T:ANE build version?

What he is saying is the session is not on the DLS nor does it appear under a search for halfdan but somehow it is appearing in CM for download.

Basically, until I actually downloaded the session, it was listed on the DLS in black as 'Available for Download'. It then let me download all the required dependancies for the route, including locos, rolling stock etc, but as soon as everything was downloaded, the session became obsoleted, and when I click on 'Sessions' for that route in Trainz, nothing is there.

That particular session, <kuid2:267614:100073:3> , and the two lower versions, do appear on the DLS and are shown as obsolete. They will appear whether you search for the KUID, the author (halfdan) or the name (0800 Sheffield - Leeds). However, if you try and search for a newer version, ie <kuid2:267614:100073:4> or above, by KUID, author or name, nothing shows up.

So CM seems to know that a newer version exists, but it can't actually find that newer version...

The route is fine, by the way. No problems with that whatsoever.

EDIT/UPDATE: Looking on the DLS online, searching for kuid2:267614:100073:3 tells me that there is a newer version available, but when I click to ask for details, it lists one baseboard, two ECML sessions (ECML 1505 Newcastle or something like that) and then the same session I'm trying to download. All of which are obsolete in CM. I'm so confused.

Alex,

This sounds like just what you said. The latest version is for T:ANE.

The one you have installed doesn't show up under the route, correct?

Delete that version and your original will reappear, or at least it should and don't bother to update the route. I have had to do this with some other assets I had installed that were build 3.8, but I was using build 3.7 at the time. Installing these assets caused them to become faulty and upon deleting them, the originals restored fine.

The thing is, when I search the DLS online and keep the T:ANE box checked, nothing shows up there either. I just don't understand how Trainz can find a newer session if there isn't one on the DLS. Could it mean a newer version of the KUID used to exist but has since been deleted?

That particular session, <kuid2:267614:100073:3>
Okay, this is what "halfdan" did:
He made this session and 195 other assets obsolete by adding all of them to the obsolete table of this one little asset (and you can check that you have downloaded this one):
<kuid2:267614:100065:2> 1km Basemap Y

So what I am going to do is contact N3V and make them either fix or delete this version of the asset.

:127 is a generic version number for items that have a kuid2 in front of them and no version number at the end (ie. kuid2:267614:100073). Therefore a :127 will always obsolete a lower version number (ie. :3). The only way I know of to 'cure' this is to manually change the :127 version of the kuid by changing the kuid2: tag to kuid:

I hope this helps
Kind regards

Thank you Oknotsen, And thank you for explaining why this has occurred; I appreciate your patience.

Ahh, that's interesting. Okay!

Hi Alex - How would you like an updated version of the Leeds to Sheffield Route (TANE)? You could either create your own Session, or wait a short while for my Session. Thoughts?

I came across this exact same problem just now and searching for a solution. Editing the "1km Basemap Y" so it does not make everything obsolete did not really work, disabling it too also does not work and for some reason the Content Manager is refusing to download the probably working sessions when I tell it to "Download This Version".

@
oknotsen: what was N3V's response to this issue? I seems to me that absolutely nothing changed since then...

Hi Col, sorry, just seen this. Would absolutely LOVE that, as soon as I can get a computer that will run TANE (That's a WIP!)

Cheers.

Make sure Santa has no doubts what you would like and, if not cash, then give Santa some minimum specs to work with! :)

I'm hoping Santa will bring me a new job for Christmas so I can afford do it myself :hehe: Or at least that's the plan!

The system hangs onto obsoleting information after the obsoleting asset has disappeared - it seems that once it marks the asset as obsolete it does not look at it again. You may be able to recreate the obsolete references by doing a database repair. You may be able to download the working sessions from the download site using FTP, but if they are obsoleted by assets that themselves are marked as obsolete that won't help. IIRC correctly there was a file you could delete that forced the system to recreate the obsolete table - someone might jump in with details of the process.
