NS Pittsburgh Sub (Large Pics)

I also brought up that anyone who runs Railworks should give their review of the Horseshoe route and Railworks.

I'm not going to jump headon into Railworks, just because they have a Horseshoe route.

So far I know of 3 active Horseshoe route designers in Trainz ... I am having a blast working on my route (10,000 baseboard) ... somehow we all should join our talents.
 
Looking very good Scratchy, hey are you going to be updating the signals. The NS Pittsburgh Sub M of W team is doing mandatory Signal Upgrades to Safetran Dark Vader Hoods, like the one's JR made. It would be very cool to have to different versions of signalling because then you can just run anything from Pennsylvania to NS

Yeah, i saw that, also Alto tower is apparently scheduled or demolition by the end of the year.. bummer. I was thinking i would do a bit of both, the PRR style is a bit different to the norm on modern routes and i think it will add interest (love the rusty old signal bridges), think i will base the route as it was in 2009 or something:)
Ur site is awesome Andrew and any new content would be welcomed on my route, i already have just about all of ur released stuff on there somewhere :cool:

The trees are kinda bumming me out a bit, there not permanent as the route is likely to be upgraded to TS12 soonish, maybe:hehe: :o I'm not sure about how to approach them. Cover the entire area in one type of tree, like railworks did (good 4 frames i think) or cover them in a mixture of different types... either way it doesn't look quite right to me unless there properly packed together. hmmm, think i need some inspiration... EK3 here i come!:)

Just a thought scratch... I've been really happy with pofig's trees. I think you can get some really good, realistic effects covering an area with as few as 10 "types." Plant an area, adjust the height and rotate a few trees. Then copy and paste away.

By the way... your route is looking awesome.
 
You can use Mezzoprezzo's technique of using textures on 99% of the route, and only a few sparce twees and schwubbery just close to the tracks.

There are some pretty nice textures that replicate a forest growth.

Gras11 is one of them, using the [ ] keys a rotation and blending looks good.

I once was a fan of dozens of dense trees & grass ... until my framerates were c_r_a_w_l_i_n_g

Snip for an E-Mail: After another arrival at Harrisburg, the train will head west towards Altoona to drop off the folks that boarded there. The train will be yarded at Altoona for the run on Sunday.


I dont think there has been a real recent post on it. Railfest is this coming weekend, October 1, and 2. I dont know all the details, but I know there are two excursions. The first I believe leaves Harrisburg on Saturday. I believe it heads to Altoona, and around the curve, and I believe back to Harrisburg via NBER and the NS Buffalo Line. The other I believe is Sunday, and I believe heads west on the Pittsburgh Line around the curve to CP Wing then across the Port Perry Bridge and down the Mon Line to the OC Bridge, then back east to Altoona via the Conemaugh Line

Yeah that'd be really good, im interested in how much there going to change the layout of Altoona and Slope interlocking, theres a lot of working going on atm taking down signal bridges and removing turnouts:)

I have a couple of suggestions regarding the screens in the last post.

1 - Is there a ground texture that would blend better with the trees on the side of the mountain?
2 - Except for a few trees close to the tracks, there's little or no variation in the color of the trees. There are naturally lighter and darker colored trees and dead trees in forests like that. You could throw in a few lighter and darker colored ones in at random. There might be some JVC trees that'll fit the bill.

Just my opinion; other than those two things, I am blown away! :eek: You've put a lot of work into this, and it shows. Keep it up, by all means!:D

Would u say a darker texture then? Ill have a look and stick up a pic, it took me a while to find the one im using atm but i think u could be right
In regard to the trees ill add some more variation as well, i think other then the gum trees in the foreground that entire forest was just copy/pasted of four different trees...

Been ironing out grades again today on both sides of the slopes, there more or less spot on now, as well as treeing and seeing how much i can get away with while keeping frame rates decent.. finding out where all the little detail are along the route as well, such as the maintenance xings, dragging defect detectors and flange lubricators. Will post pics when i get some more progress done:)

Does anyone have any pics of the slag dump north of Johnstown? Can seem to find any other then whats on Bingmaps...

Hi scratchy,

Hopefully I'm not butting in here but thought I might be able to help with what I believe ulmer94 is trying to explain. Hope you don't mind me posting a shot in your thread to explain.

In the shot you can see a line along the river bank where the trees begin/end. The texture I use to blend the forest so you don't see gaps in the trees so easily is Grass05 <kuid2:98966:4000765:1> I believe I picked up this technique from Mr. gfisher's routes. If you want a higher def texture JVC <kuid:328583:16035> Dark green grass would work as well. You don't have to retexture the whole route, just where the forested areas are.

As for the trees.. I use the same trees I believe you are using except I mix up the light and dark colors about a 60/40 mix dark and light trees. Also I tend to throw in a few JVC trees here and there. And along the edge of the forest I tend to scatter some shrubs and weeds to blend the edges (haven't done it it this screen shot though)

Your route is fantastic so far hope this may help in some way.
 
@octls2 - Yup, that's what I meant. I wouldn't use those all-fired G-R-E-E-E-E-N trees :p in your shot for my dominant tree type, however...just a personal preference. :)

It really does look good, scratchy! And I'm glad to be of help. :)
