North Central Colorado

despite my recent injections of testosterone.

I think YOU were supposed to take those, not give them to her!:hehe: ACORN let me go already....they said I was nuts! Thing is it's fine signing up dead people to vote, but they tend to have a problem following through with it... . (rim shot)

I must say your route is looking great, and I would discourage you from going all 2010 with it, unless you are happy with the content limitations.

Hey.........I'm as innocent as Mark McGuire..... (rim shot)

....but now you've got me wondering. That hairy back of hers got to be a bit much. :D

I'm sorry to hear that ACORN let you go. Maybe you should have handed out more cigarettes, even to dead people. I don't believe in discriminating against anybody........even dead people that smoke. (rim shot #2)

Thanks for your comment on the route. I think you just talked me out of 2010 for now. You are very persuasive.

My other little gmax projects have finished for the time being. You got any more Colorado doo-dads I can make? I have a little more practice under my belt now. Pick something you think I could handle (no, not Janet) and send me some good pictures. Preferably something you've photographed yourself that you could get more shots of, if required.

Gee...was the reference to a sports figure acceptable or does that offend you and EVERYONE else as well?

It certainly offended me! Politics are fine (especially ones I don't agree with), but sports? Absolutely not!

Back on topic,

Jim - those are wonderful screenshots of your route; I've been having quite a bit of fun following your progress. Thank you for sharing!

Deano, I do have some structures I could use your help with. I'll dig into the files and get some pics up ASAP.
Thanks! :)

Hey Jim,

It's discouraging to see such negativity.
I personally thought that this thread was very entertaining, including the recent humor.
I don't think you offending anybody, so go right on ahead, I for one was enjoying it.:hehe:

Cheers,
Woody

Hey Deane,

Here's a little silo complex that is a landmark structure along the old Colorado & Southern line. Maybe other's would like to have this in their route(s) too?

I'm not sure if this would be fun for you, but either way, thanks for the offer!

I'll give it a go.

The silos themselves look pretty easy but I'll probably need some more shots of that tangled pipe work and hopper assembly, so I can both understand how it all works, and get authentic surface textures from them.

I think you have my e-mail, so send any further correspondence that way so we can free up this thread for further screenshots and rim shots.

Stay warm y'all.
:p

p.s. What do they keep in those silos?

Thanks Deane,

I'll see if I can get over there tomorrow and take some pics from different angles of just the pipe assembly. What I've done before is do the smaller, more intricate pipes in the form of a 2 dimensional file with an alpha so that it doesn't eat more more polys.

I think they were used for grain years ago, but I'm not sure what's stored in them now. I will find out.

I can't imagine anything else inside, those silos are all over Illinois. I would have responded sooner, but I've been busy with my son running for student council president. You know, he's got good, clear skin and he doesn't really have that Midwestern dialect (unless he wants to), so I think he has a good shot!;)

Wow, that silo looks like it will be a nice piece of work when it's completed. I can't wait to see some screenshots in your route Jim.

Jim

Just to let you know that work has begun. I've been using the photos above just to get some of the structures in place. But I'm going to need those other pics we talked about to do the hopper chutes and grain augers justice.

Whoa! You weren't kiddin'!

GREAT!!!!!!!! :udrool:

Excuse #52 for not getting over there and getting the piping pics. I've got an appointment in that area tomorrow and will get there for sure!

Thanks Deane!

Very nice job, Jim. The route and it's accompaning screenshots lookt amazing! A couple of years ago I was in that area with Roger Hill, the storm chaser, and we past through the Fort Collins area on the way to Denver. When I looked at your screen shots, I had that weird, I've been here before feeling come over me. Each shot has me stopping to look and relook at them again and again because your depth of field, and the attention to detail makes that route so realistic.

I know what you mean about feeling the history. Up here in the Merrimack Valley, we have many miles of abandoned sides, branches, and many, many empty mills. I look at all these empty buildings and think of all the workers that not only worked there, but also suffered greatly in the process. This doesn't even scratch the surface, when you think about the work that went into building these mills, canals, and laying the tracks that are now buried under weeds, or the empty ROW that used to be the branches.

So it appears that the same management that drove the GWR into the ground, sucked every cent out of us, and now has sent the rest of the jobs offshore. Anyway, good luck with your route, and I look forward to seeing more.

John

John,

Thanks so much for your post. I'm pretty familiar with Haverhill.

When I started working on this route in '06 or so, I was working at Amesbury High School and living in Merrimac, MA at the time.
A co-worker went to CU back in the 1980's and we used to reminisce about the Colorado railroad lines.

( I never did understand why there is a Merrimack and a Merrimac)

Right behind where we lived on Church St, was an abandoned branch of the Boston & Maine that had been out of service since the 1970's. It's now a walking path that stops just short of HWY 110 in Merrimac. There used to be a rail yard there including a turntable, that is all now an overgrown field, rundown industrial buildings, piles of railroad ties and junked appliances.

(When going through Merrimac on HWY 110, go north on Winter St or Church St (they merge), continue north and take a right a Heriman Rd. This will take you under a bridge that is the old branch ) It's hard to believe there where tracks that go through woods that dense.

When I wanted inspiration, it was a 5 minute walk through the woods to where the clearing is that was once the old yard. For whatever reason, that one little area reminded me a lot of the GWR lines here in north Colorado and made me homesick.

Another spot that was great for exploring for me was the Newton Jct.
area and the abandoned sidings, just over the NH border. Another is a siding that goes into the old cement factory near Plastow. Before moving, I took the video camera and spent much time walking the rail lines and filming.
It's nice to be back in north CO, but I miss the Merrimack valley region too.
