New, Which Version to Get?

Hi, I am new to the series. I see 3 versions on Steam all $29.99. Classics 1 & 2, Classics 3, and World Builder 2009 edition.


Which one is the best version overall? What would you recommend I do with my 30 bucks?

TC3 if you are into UK steam (1960's era). Excellent. Stable, (with superb quality steam loco's, loco's & rolling stock). Still being well supported with weekly contents updates. Checkout this web site; http://www.trainzclassics.co.uk/

TRS2009WBE offers far more variety & content, (but still has a few bugs, most of which should be sorted out when SP2 comes out for it later on this year). - The direction Trainz's is heading in...

As for TC 1 & 2 in my personal opinion;
TC 1 (extremely disappointing). Just another everyday point to point route that is of no better quality than some of the routes on the DLS. No offence intended to the creator/s - any creator - route builder. (it didn't live up to the pre-launch fan fair/hype!!!)...
TC 2, (very good/excellent) if you are just into Trams... (both have very limited built in contents).

My recommendation; If you can afford to get both TC3 & TRS2009WBE, then that's what I would do. I'm sure you will enjoy both...

The Trainz Classic line was/is designed to provide a specific regionaly talored package. Each TC release ships with only the content required for the route and sessions supplied with that specific release. TC 1 and 2 were released together in one package and TC3 separately.

New users purchasing the Trainz Classics packages were usually left with a feeling of "incompleteness" due to the lack of content. Most rollingstock items including locomotives available for download often required built-in content available in the 2004, 2006 or now the 2009 versions but are not available in TC versions. As a result, new user complaints were quite frequent.

The solution to the Built-in content problem was to purchase a copy of 2006 and import the *.JA files into TC. Auran has release a version called Trainz Railwayz in the US and Canada (possibly else where as well but I can not confirm or deny), which contained both TC1/2 and Trainz 2006. In my personal opinion this is a good "starting point" for a new user. For some one who already has 2004 or preferrably 2006, then purchase all of the TC versions though TC3 is the absolute best and most stable (of course this is my opinion - you will find many who disagree).

I am currently on the fence with 2009. Some days I absolutely love it and would happily recommend it and other days I get so P...... that I want to recommend against it. The fact of the matter regardless of how I feel is this: Trainz 2009 is here, it is superior in many, many ways, it is being improved and it still blows any other Train simulator out of the water.....Well off the rails if you will...

The decision, ultimately, is yours to make. As mentioned in an earlier reply to this thread (which you sort of took offence to) is do your research. There are countless posts exactly like this one that will have all kinds of kudos and bashes for and against each and every version of Trainz. It is for you, and you alone, to decide what will be the best purchase for you.

A brief summary:
2004 - very stable, lots of content, easy to work with
2006 - took a new approach to content storage which most people don't like but in reality, works great! There are some sound issues but they can be resulved by searching the forums
TC 1/2 - Limited content, if you want to download rollingstock you could encounter problems.
TC 3 - Probably the most stable release ever. The best (British) Steam and signalling available. A definite must if you like the British rail system.
2009 - Two modes of use, "Native" and "Compatability" mode. In Native mode, supplied content (mainly trees/bushes) using Alpha Channels can cause problems. As well only a very small amount of "native" content is supplied "out of the box" but more is coming online almost daily. Compatability mode allows you to run the older content (usually) with out problem. The best reason though - it is still current, and still being developed.

I hope you can gain some type of understanding from this. Again search the forums but above all - Have Fun - that is what it is all about!

In my not so humble opinion, get a TS2009 version that includes TRS2006. If you are into British steam, also get TC3.

In my oppinion (whether it matters) it depends on your need in a simulator..... what kinds of trains are you looking to run? also are you looking for a cutting edge simulator or an "old and reliable one"?

Ok I recommend 2009. Reasons are:
It has most of the older content found on different versions.
Is actively being improved.
Is moving to improve FPS with new style of content creation.
SP2 also has some software to help fix some of the old assets ( PEVs' software)
It works smoother than my 2004 and 2006.
Has many improvements like extra distance ,filtering and CM2.

Before I start I wanted to post that my instincs tell me we have similar attitudes and are both fed up with people who don't consider other people when they act or post. With that said I think you are barking up the wrong tree:


"Cheers", lol it doesn't count as nice manners just because you use words like this, rather than compete over who is politer (I think you may win that one), why don't we actually cooperate.

I don't know exactly if you realize this, but you are doing exactly what I didn't want, being confrontational and not helpful.


Look, sometimes you are right, sometimes one shouldn't say anything and just keep the mouth shut (you should take your own advice to be honest) that would be the mature thing to do.

However some situations (as the one you faced) require a verbal response. Sometimes, you just gotta keep it real.


One should only post if they are going to contribute something helpful to a forum. I said "I appreciate all responses" showing him that I wasn't trying to really be a dick, just tell him that if he wants to tell people to use the search feature (and what bugs me about this is I DID use it, why wouldn't I?), go post his own topic about it.

Keep really really obvious advice out of these posts.

Otherwise we are going to have people like him (and yourself) coming in here and telling everyone obvious things all the time, it will clutter up my post if everyone is talking about how "google searches" and "forum searches" are going to help me find my answer.

How exactly are searches going to make the general community aware that I am here and facing an issue over which game to buy.

I would like to thank everyone else for the awesome responses. Seems many people are divided. They see the future potential of 09, but recommend some of the earlier versions because of bugs.

My options are from Steam:
Classics 1 and 2 (30 bucks)
Classics 3 (30 bucks)
or
2009 (30 bucks)

IIRC, someone had a problem with a version that they bought off of Steam. I would suggest buying the Digital Download directly from Auran.

I would recommend TS2009, I know there is a popular opinion that it is not up to the standard that everyone is expecting but the reality is 2004/2006 all came out with bugs.

SP2 is being worked on and will be released as soon as it is ready and should/will fix the majority of the bugs that exist.
The new content features are a great improvement with regards to FPS increase and visual appeal.

I have been using TS2009 since February and I am more than impressed with it. I am also happy that I have bought this Software as I know that it helps keep Auran running. If Auran wasn't here we wouldn't have these forums or the DLS.

Also, if you buy it direct from Auran you will have access to the patches as soon as they are released.

How to spend 30.00

Is it not interesting on how many view's there are on Trainz? I've got from UTC to WBE and I think if I could find 2004 that would be the best choice for your $30.00. Because of content,being user friendly,stability and just a darn good game in general. Happy Trainz....
