New Utility from myself (shaneturner12) - PC Information Application

HiBaller . whoooooosh. way over my head.

Sometimes I'm accused of speaking in tongues. When I first started with computers and the like (1963) we were thought of as Wizards and were likely to offer sacrifices of chickens to accomplish our arcane programming skills. It's still a learned vocation, but made easier by far with the tools that are available now.

Just to let you know, there seems to be numerous issues between Norton and my site and possibly my software.

Something tells me that there is a false positive problem going on, or that I need to rename my program.

As for any other users who are getting Norton issues when accessing my site, this is due to the way Norton rates sites (at domain level, not at subdomain level) which means that thanks to other websites on that domain, mine is getting tarred with the same brush. I have contacted Norton about this but nothing has changed yet.

As far as I am aware Norton is the only security software that is causing issues.

If anyone else is getting the issue regarding the program disappearing during Norton activity, please send me the details via PM on what it detected it as, which version, which process detected it, and what type of detection it was, as I can then contact Norton and get the problem fixed.

Thankyou for the comments given so far.

Hello Shane,

Downloaded your program without any problems.

Used your program within Win Xp Sp 3 and Win 7 - Result : a job well done.

Great tool. :Y:

Best regards

Kurt

Thankyou for your kind comments - the tool is designed to work with Windows 2000 and later.

I have made it so it mimises the need for extra software and drivers.

PROGRAM UPDATE

The program's Check Connection Issues feature can now assist with intermittent DLS issues.

Existing users will need to re-download the program to see the changes.

Shane

Tracert/traceroute can be used alongside my application for that kind of diagnosis, but it is not as reliable in my opinion.

I may look into adding that feature, but I am aware that it's reliabilty is limited.

You're probably right. I find it only useful if there is a larger than normal delay between when I request something and the actual delivery. I know what the "normal" path is, and if tracert gives me something different, then I know a router/server is out somewhere and try later.

Bill

Good change, Shane. I wonder if a 'tracert' might also help pinpoint path failures.

Bill

This is useful to pinpoint a down router or access point on the internet or network. The other day when N3V had technical difficulties, which I don't know what the problem was, but it was there, there were a quite a few hops that had * instead of a router name and IP address from my location.

When these happen, then this can definitely pinpoint an error with the network because there are some really slow connections then that could possibly be timing out.

Not all servers allow ICMP packets these days, so a time out when running a Tracert is not actually proof that the server is or is not timing out. If there is a problem you should get a Destination net unreachable message.

Not helped by this I found on the subject.

The Windows tracert.exe program uses 92 byte ICMP packets to conduct its trace. Sadly this is virtually identical to the still-virulent Nachi Worm and this type of packet is specifically blocked on all of our border routers, making the tracert.exe program unusable.

I use WinMTR from sourceforge.net still suffers from some blocked pings etc though doesn't seem as bad as tracert.

Looks interesting Malc.

Just to let users know, I have released another update.

This update will enhance the Connection Status results, with a bit of additional information.

As before, users will currently need to re-download the program to see the changes.

:hehe: You're ending up like I do sometimes, Shane. Nothing worse than "Feature Creep". sometimes I try to accommodate, sometimes I don't.

I checked my own router and, yup, it does reject ICMP packets. Actually, it doesn't 'reject' them it just throws them on the floor without any reaction at all. This way, someone PINGing me can't tell if I exist or not.

Bill

Luckily, I'm only accepting reasonable requests, in order to assist other users.

Ping tests is only part of the networking component, as I know that some routers do reject them, but they cannot totally reject all communication from my program.
