Thinking about screen size, is it fair to assume that most people are using at least 1024*768? If so, bigger sigs could be allowed, because of the size of the screen that they cover.

Midland referred to clutter - as a former moderator on a different, non-Trainz related board, I can tell you that we didn't set a size limit and it was chaos. There was one person who put a very tall portrait sig on, and refused to change it because we didn't write a rule down saying he couldn't (We kicked him off later for other misdemenours [sp?]).

Moral - you need a limit.

Personal opinion: Sigs break the uniformity, so I would recommend people have something (small). Most sigs are works of art (The one from the aforementioned board someone made for me, but is far too big for this board). Sigs also make good adverts, and I like ZVW's idea of using the old 'DLS' ticket.

I agree with expanding the characters limit in the signature, it would be nice also if the size of the signature banner could be upped a little bit to say 40kb.

This has always started variouis threads/debates but it is good to see a poll and coments by different people. I signature have never really understood how to correctly adjust my signature to the requied rule so I have just leff it as it is :D. To me its 20538 bytes and 162 x 151 pixels and I suppose I could play around with it to bring it to the required rules. This then raises another question for those who are not to sure about how to do this (new users or dummies like me :D ), do we just ban them or remove there signature which just over the limt ?????

:):):)

P.S. Off topic, why will my "ieSpell" not work when posting a reply or starting a new thread ??

I think, if your signature is over the limits then the moderators should just remove the signature and tell you whats happened and how to fix it. I mean, the trainz community is one of the nicest bunch of people and we shouldn't really "ban" them if they've misread the rules or don't know them. For one, i've known that theres was a limit til' someone told me.

cheers, Daniel

From my corespondence with alan at the time of the making of the poll. I got the impression that the decision was not up to him. anyways he is at home having a nice quiet weekend right now. so all we can do is wait and watch.

As this has turned into a discussion, I would like to put in a request for two sizes (only one per customer),

100*500
50*1000

The first can be used for banners, pics etc the second for train pics/gifs,
both having the 25k max of course.
I would not like the vertical size go over 100, it's a pain scrolling past them where-as horizontal size makes no difference.

Cheers David

ps, could you at least round out the sizes to make them easier to remember

I'll go with the 480 x 100 size and agree with zatov on 'the limitation of characters (coding included)'
AND with pommie above for his idea of expanded width for train gifs :)

100*500
50*1000

I think your sizes are the wrong way around, 100*500, thats a tall image, and 50*1000, well, thats huge, i think you meant 500*100 or 1000*50.

Anyway, as for my rant, i shall chose NO signature pictures, just annoying to have them, i find im looking at them more than the actual screenshots, I use the bit-tech fourms and pictures in signatures are not allowed and the fourm threads load so much quicker, however you will need to increase the size of the text based signature.

It was a pain making my sig only 60 high. That extra 40 pixels made a huge difference in its readability. And with the option of being able to shut off the sigs in the "User CP/ Edit Options" those that don't want to see the sigs or screen shots can shut them off. A handy function for those on dial up. Just don't forget that just because Alan started this poll DOESN'T mean Auran has to or will change the sig size. But it DOES show that Auran or at least Alan is interested in our thoughts in the matter of sig size. Regardless of the outcome of this poll there will be those that won't like the decision but the rest of us will adapt and deal with it like normal.

Image weight and dimensions aside (although 480x100 sounds sensible), I think the main problem is that some people never adhered to the COC terms concerning banners in the past, and a certain few were allowed to get away with it.

I don't see this being any different this time around, and so I would suggest a piece of code that checks the dimensions of the banner when posting, and either displays a graphic stating the infringement, or resizes it the maximum allowed.
And there's no reason that this couldn't be done for screenshots either.

Smiley.
