New Aircraft

Hi Guys,

Over the last few months I have had a number of requests to reskin various models of mine, or to host the models on external sites. I have had some unexpected results on occasion, which do not give the outcome I expected. :(

I thought I might make a few comments on my licence and policy I would like respected.

You may have noticed that I have established a new website, with unlimited storage and bandwidth, to get over restrictions I had with my previous site. My site is to allow me to describe more fully how to use the models, and show you what is available, along with some tutorials that may be useful. I do not host models on my site for download, but will be listing the kuids for recent models so they can be located on the Download Station, there is still a lot to do in updating the site, before I return to modeling.

I have always tried to support Auran by having my models on the DLS, users need to have registered a legal copy of Trainz to get access. This helps keep Auran in business, otherwise we do not have an ongoing hobby or interest. I have had many requests to send models directly, clearly the user does not have a legal copy of Trainz.

I also like the DLS to be used for having all models in the one place, there is nothing more frustrating than having to find dependent models for a download map, or model dependencies, that are not on the DLS, often you have to chase all over the internet to find them, and then have to register on some sites to download them. By limiting the location to the DLS, I can keep track of the models for updates, as we did for the recent shadow updates for TS12, having them in multiple locations means that linking to updates is not possible, and then I get emails asking why my models do not work, when downloaded from external sites.

While some may not always agree with Auran's policy of not supporting builds before Trainz Classics 3, and the benefit of a First Class Ticket, we must understand that they are a business, and hard commercial decisions must be made. Likewise I cannot support models for early versions, but to allow most users to be able to use the models, I will keep the build as low as possible to satisfy minimum DLS requirements, unless I need a function only available in a higher build. My upload models are checked for functionality in TS12. I will update many older models as I get time.

1. I have kept my licence simple, that if anyone wants to do anything with my models they contact me. I also ask that they do not make money out of my models. In other words, I do not want my scripts etc used in payware models, I have not made any money out of my models and I don't see why others should do so using my work. I would like models freely available through the DLS.

2. I have given permission generally that my aircraft can be reskinned, the conditions are that they be uploaded only to the DLS, not to another site, and not sold, nor sent out by email, as I mention above. This lets you have some fun, to get the aircraft you want, and does not require me to keep revisiting old aircraft, I can do new models. If in doubt, feel free to ask.

3. For any other model reskins, please ask so I can keep track of what is done, I often get emails saying so and so has reskined a model of mine, did they have permission? For this reason I ask that some words be included in the config description such as "reskin of an original model by Vulcan, used with permission" or similar. I also ask that any description and my original licence be included, so users know how to use the models.

4. Sorry, for the reasons above, I do not wish the models to be hosted on any site other than the DLS.

I hope you understand my position, I do try to share my work with you all, and give you an interest in some of the more unusual models that can be created for Trainz. A thanks to those who have requested permission in the past, and appreciation for the quality reskin work you do. :)

Ian

Hi Folks,

I've just picked up tainz in recent months for the first time. Needless to say I'm a rank hack compared with some of you. I'm a way off being able to perform reskins & creating models at this point, but I'll get there eventually.

I've been following this forum tread for a while now & it has loads of useful info so thanks. I'm also very impressed with the variety of aircraft & airport accessories you kind folk have shared with the community especially Ian with his great models & informative website. I'm hoping I'll to contribute something useful in the near future.
I sympathise with Ian's previous post. To put so much work in without asking for a cent is very noble & it would be a disgrace if someone was to make money from his hand. (enough grovelling now:hehe: ).

So I've been working on a route of Vancouver B.C. as it has all the different aspects that Trainz caters for; scenery, an international airport and a busy port that requires both trains & boats (not to mention float planes). I started on the airport a couple of months back (I haven't yet worked out how to upload a jpg's to this forum site or I would have, sorry). It's coming along slowly but surely with the limited hours in the week I have to work on it.
What's missing from the route are a couple of aircraft reskins that hopefully you guys can help me with.
The most obvious is the Dash 8's. Vancouver airport sees many Air Canada Jazz Dash 8s as well as the Horizon (Alaskan) aircraft from Seattle. Most of the Jazz aircraft are the 100 & 311 versions (in green, orange & red livery) but the Horizon Dash 8s also have the 400 series. What I'm hoping is that one of you reskin gurus can (with Ian's permission) add a few of these to the growing list in DLS. (p.s. I really like the startup versions).
The other one is a UPS reskin of both the DC-10 & 727. I'm hoping they can be "easily" adapted from the Fed-ex versions kicking around.
The others will likely require new models so I don't want to get my hopes up for now. (Maybe they'll be high on the list when I learn how to create asset models.) Air Canada run Boeing 777s (as to Singapore airlines) Embraer E190s (Richard Bransen has recently bought some for Virgin Australia) & CRJ-700s. I've seen a screen shot of a CRJ-700 on this thread but can't locate it on DLS.

The other one I'd love to get for Vancouver is a bit more tricky & I think Ian may be the only one to help with this one. Vancouver port has a buzzing little seaplane airport in Burrard Inlet right next to the CBD. There are two companies & one of them (West Coast Air) runs Twin Otters in two colour schemes (dark blue/yellow & green/light blue). Ian's Twin Otter float plane should be able to be reskinned, but I fear the noses of the ones flying out of Vancouver are slightly shorter & have winglets on the tail (see links) http://www.flickr.com/photos/7663586@N02/2699873799/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:WestCoastAirFloatplane.jpg
Maybe a small model adjustment could solve the problem (although I don't really understand the process).

Ian. Do you have a plan for a startup version of the Twin Otters because that would be pretty good as well? I notice the land based version does.

If someone is looking for a reskin project & is keen do do a couple of these, that would be great. In the mean time I'll continue building up Vancouver which I plan to upload to DLS (if it doesn't get too big).

As a bit of a side project, has anyone considered making moving versions of the various airport vehicles such as the "Airport Tractor" & Airport Trailer"? Or a refulling truck? Just a thought. Again, way beyond my current capability.

Cheers guys,

Rob

Hi Rob, welcome, thanks for the nice comments.

Yes I will do a startup version of the Twin Otter, there are quite a few others on the list that would be useful as well, but each requires a bit of work and updating.

I did have in mind some drivable luggage trains, another item on the long list. :)

Papou or NZMS, could you do any of these

I can probably do the Spirit A320 as they also fly into Sint Maarten. Do you want this in the new paint scheme or the old one (as is shown in your picture).

Thanks Fred, a few checks before upload.

Jamie, bird strikes don't shut down my aircraft, you have to use the B key.

Oh, B for Bird. Hope my pilots are as well trained then. :o

Ian

Thanks Rob, it has been uploaded, may take a few days for approval.

This one could not just be reskinned, so thought I would do it. It needed a rebuild, new texture layout, propellers and shadow, about 7 hours to do that.

Ian

Ouch! 7 hrs?! I see why you're so protective of your models & rightly so.
Clearly I have much to learn about models & re-skins. I'm currently toying with a Dash 8 reskin just to see if I can do it. I have a suspicion it will be a bit like Frankenstein's monster, but you have to start somewhere right?

Guys,

I've generated 3 re-skins of sorts. It's my first step into the world of models.
What I have done is merged the startup versions of 3 Dash 8s with 2 of Maynard's & one of Ian's reskins that exist as non-startup versions.
They are:
Dash 8-311 - US Airways
Dash 8-400 - Continental Connection
Dash 8-400 - Qantas link (only the pink startup existed)

Any objections to uploading to DLS? And Ian, it may be worth having a look at the config etc to see whether I'm on the right track.

My next project is to do a propper reskin. I'm finding it much more difficult that I first thought. I'm using a photo editing package that isn't quite up to scratch (Arcsoft Photobase). It came with a Cannon scanner years ago.
Any suggestions about which software is the best option to use? I know Ian uses PanitShop pro. Is the low end version good enough or do you need to go to X4?

Cheers

Rob

Hello Rob, no objections. If you wanted to send me the files for an opinion or advice, feel free. The DLS is being slow to approve models, I have had some waiting for three days now (incl the Twin Otter).

I had not done all the dash 8 versions as startup models. You may find different versions of aircraft have different propeller markings, so it may be hard to match a new startup model where the propeller is now seen, with an old propeller, the textures may not be the same.

If you make a new reskin texture file, use the same name as the original, the texture.txt file looks for the original name, and it is also buried in the exported .im mesh file. It is best to try to replace the original file with the new one, in other words do not have to include both the original file and the new file in the model to make it work, or you are uploading two large files instead of one.

If you really want to change the name for the new texture file, you can replace the name within the texture.txt file, eg:

Texture.txt file is called main_qantas400.texture.txt

Inside it is:
Primary=main_qantas400.tga
Tile=st

You can change it, for instance, to:
Primary=main_qantas400_new.tga
Tile=st

But retain the name of the file as main_qantas400.texture.txt

Yes confusing I know but can be useful to preserve the original texture file and don't overwrite it.

Just let me know which models are done, so I do not repeat.

Paint Shop pro and Photoshop are probably the best, some use the free Gimp, I use PSP 11 for most of my work. I use Photoshop when I want shading and beter font control, and it is much easier to use for making Alpha channels than PSP, however it is expensive.

PSP5 I believe was the last free version download, if you can find it. PSP8 onwards has perspective correction which is useful. I have forgotten if PSP5 supports layers or not.

Layers are very useful in PSP or PS. If you load the main texture as a background, and make a new layer, you can repaint areas without changing the background - you can make the new layer semitransparent as you go, to see what is underneath and where you should paint. Using multiple layer is common, you just need to save it as psp file to preserve the layers for later use.

By default, the initial saving of tga file, after installing PSP, is compressed. You must turn this off in the save options or the textures will not work in Trainz.

PSP is reasonably priced, and has enough features to do a good job, I think PSP11 cost me about $AU140.

Ian

Any objections to uploading to DLS?

Not at all, you are saving me a job! :D Just flick me a PM of the ones you are going to do. Just one small thing though, can you please add a line in the config that states along the line of "A reskin/update of the of the reskin by nzms of the original Vulcan model.'"?

Also, the Novair A320 has been uploaded and is now waiting aproval on the DLS.

Maynard.

P.S on that note I am still willing to take PM's from TS2012 users who want reskins updated.

Hello all,

Ian, nice floatplane this new Twin Otter! 7 hours for a complete re-build, I consider this as very quick, compared to my own speed for simple reskins...

Rob, welcome to the club. I just want to add to Ian's advices, that a good documentation and pictures are very important.

Following a request from Stmsoccer, I am working on an US Airways 737. Just fighting now with pale grey strips on the fuselage aft which dont want to connect with the tail..
One small shot of the progress:

Next uploads, when the DLS will be more reactive, should be a batch of Fokker F27, with the liveries of french commuter airlines of the 70's - 80's.

Pascal, it looks like we need a startup verion of the Fokker I guess, perhaps I should look at that while we wait for the DLS approval process to fix itself. The B key is currently used for flaring, I will have to change that to "startup".
