N3V Needs to support pre-SP1 users with DLC

N3V are well aware of the Murchinson DLC issue and are probably working to fix it, so it's not wise to jump to conclusions without solid proof. As it's only 1 DLC pack that was affected, it was likely to be a problem with one download (which could be for a variety of reasons including timeouts).

This is annoying for sure, but you still have the option of installing the old version into TS12 without SP1 to use it.

Yes Paul, that is the entire point of this thread. It appears you finally get it. There are users who find SP1 is not for them, and it seems N3V is ignoring the whole lot of us. I will state for the record I have Murchison (pre SP1) and it installs into both TS10 and 12 very nicely. No horror stories of failed downloads taking tens of hours or anything of that sort.

Edit:
Lest we digress, the Murchison DLC is only an example and is part of many reasons why some users are finding this particular update hard to swallow.

My recently purchased PRR Fleet of Modernism DLC downloaded and installed in to TS2010 SP3 fine, no stalled download and the install took about 5 minutes. I'm not sure what N3Vs problem with .exe files is.

I don't like to say this, but I can understand why N3V have the new system for DLC purchasing and downloading.

Firstly, serial numbers. How many times on here has there been threads where users have had problems installing DLC content due to entering a wrong digit (or even their Trainz serial number) instead of the correct serial number? With the old system, if an incorrect serial is entered during installation of a DLC pack, it does not tell you that, and the only way of knowing is that nothing appears in-game.

Secondly, ease of use. It looks far easier to download DLC content in-game rather than having to fiddle about with installers (and the possibility of having to manually copy files from one place to another).

Thirdly, multiplayer support. I realise that most people on this thread may not agree with me here, but some routes do make use of content from packs like Settle and Carlisle, and until now haven't been able to make their routes/sessions multiplayer compatible due to unknown dependencies.

I know that the new system does prevent editing of payware DLC content, but in my opinion it's good, at least for newer users who may break the content simply by deleting a rule or similar (or for some content making problematic edits in the config.txt file).

True, but making fact-free sweeping statements about software you don't own is the norm around here at the moment. If nobody buys any of my DLC in the future (DRM free by the way) I'll just have to postpone my retirement by about 10 milliseconds.

Paul

"Fact-free sweeping statements" like Trainz has always had DRM?

Well said Nicky. Paul, it's not your fault, it N3V's. I would very much like to buy your DLC, but if it is released through SimCentral I can't because the only way to acquire all future DLC is through SP1's built-in downloading system. It's N3V who applies the DRM, not you. You realise, that if N3V goes belly-up, all the people who have your DLC will not be able to activate it and it will be vapourware. And, N3V can deactivate your product whenever they like. For example, if they don't like some posts you've made on the forum, they can simply deactivate your DLC. It sounds ridiculous and paranoid but other gaming companies have locked players out of their games for dubious reasons before. Look it up. If you do not want DRM, refuse to release your products through N3V's store, we'll thank you for it.
You'll have to weigh up the risks of N3V going belly up yourself. Obviously telling everybody not to buy DLC or the next version of Trainz is likely to make this a self fulfilling prophecy but there you go. I don't have a problem with you not buying DLC, that's your decision and you have the right to decide to do this.

I'd be more worried myself about Apple deactivating my AppleID and rendering my iPhone, iPad, iPod and my Apple TV useless.

That's not what I said. I was referring RailWorks/Train Simulator 13 or whatever it's called this week. I assumed you were as well until I read this. I don't know if it had DRM from the start as I don't have it.

Paul

Well it's good to be back in the two camp situation (well five if you count OSX, iOS and Android). A nostalgic tear leaks from my eye, it's just like the good old days, where the TRS 04 'holdouts' threw brickbats at the TRS06 'fanboys' and vice versa.

What has been will be again,
what has been done will be done again;
there is nothing new under the sun.

As well you should be; companies just as big and wealthy, like Microsoft and Amazon, have done just that to purchasers of their content. That's why you couldn't give me an Apple product (just got rid of a Mac last week that I wouldn't touch), let alone subscribe to their services. I manage to get along quite well with my non-Apple products.

True, but I and millions of others worry about this risk on about the same level as we would if somebody told us that a bicycle had fallen over in China.

If N3V does go belly up then my DLC won't be vapourware, I'd still have it. The rest of you can ask the NSA for their backups.

Likewise, most of those folks who bought digital content from respectable vendors like Walmart, Microsoft, Amazon, etc. were equally confident and cavalier, and now they're left with worthless purchases they cannot use.

It's kind of funny in a way. What's that saying about a certain person and his money being soon parted?

Sure, you'll have it sitting on a disk. But any post-SP1 DLC will be as worthless as a 200mb null file, since you won't be able to use it.

You're right, after all it's completely impossible to get DRM free versions of software.

Oh, I know where I can get a DRM-free version of just about anything. But they're not legal, and usually come with an unpleasant little bonus package of some nice malware. But, if you're privy to a legal copy of DRM-free SP1, please do tell.

okay, a null file, i.e., /dev/null is empty, no size.

do you mean a 200mb file of /dev/zero? :p

FTFY... Have a good one!
