N&W 475 ON THE NS STEAM PROGRAM

Most material I've read says 4501 can handle 12 cars on level track. I know that track has a grade, but then again, Amtrak's cars are lighter. Of course, one thing that is certain is that NS will provide cars from its own business train for these excursions. The railroad has even bought old coaches for added capacity in the anticipation for future trips.

As the engines are in Chattanooga, though, it will probably be a while before one of them ventures farther from home

Is the 611 handfired like the 475? I know that the 611 has a stoker on it but does the stoker need hand fireing by the firemen?

Stokers will take care of most of the firing for you but you still have to shovel some into the corners for example. If the stoker needed filled by hand by the fireman, what would be the advantage of putting coal in a stoker instead of straight in the boiler?

THINK MAN, THINK!

stoker fired

So steam locomotives like 425 and 611 are stoker fired instead of being hand fired if i am being corret?

it seems to me that from what I'm seeing that he has not learned anything since his last banishment and DP,the others said it once and now I'm going to say it,the 475 is not going anywhere, that is strasburg Railroad property and it is going to stay where it is,end of discussion!

coal cutter?

coal cutter is that the fireman,s job to cut coal besides shoveling coal and putting water in the boiler?

hmmm. Im goin to go out on a limb on this one...

That would be very interesting. Imagine this, not just dp, but others. Imagine a 2-8-0 or mabie a 2-8-2 goin down the line. Fireman gets out of his chair, and pulls out from the tender a big block of coal. Imagine it like an ice block. He then takes a modified ice pick and goes into the coal block.

Im not even going to continue that one. Unless that is some wierd tern for shoveling, firemen never had to do that. The coal they shoveled in, or screwed depending on the engine, came like that from their diferent refueling stations.

times and you still havent learned? Wheres that double face palm picture at...

Yeah we've started on the 4501 a little, but the main focus is 630. Especially now. I've pulled some stuff off of it.

Once the coal pile starts dwindling down a good bit, the fireman can no longer get to it. Though there's a lot of coal in there still, it does not want to come down naturally, since coal always has a crap ton of coal dust with it and seizes up. The job of a coal cutter is to go back into the bunker and pull the coal down to the boards so the fireman can get to it. It's important to have another person to do this, especially on the road, because even the two firemen are too busy doing their jobs

Another thing I'm sure you're curious about is, why two firemen? Though one person could handle it, it keeps the fireman who's actually shoveling fresh and from getting too worn out. The fireman who's not shoveling is working the water and watching the track, also an important job, which has to be done and many times with the amount of shoveling the fireman has to do, couldn't be done with just one fireman.

This was how things were done in the old steam program, which carried over onto our operations at TVRM. An since we are again the main operators of steam for NS, more than likely that this is how it will be done.

There is no way in heck, that the Norfolk Southern Corporation (owner of the Norfolk Southern Railway) will let another steam locomotive operate on their "current" steam program. Besides, they already have sufficient steam power, so why waste time adding another steam locomotive and by the by, the nearest tracks near the 475, don't belong to Norfolk Southern, they belong to Amtrak. So, in order for that to happen, Norfolk Southern, the Strasburg Rail Road and Amtrak would have to work out a deal, and I don't think Amtrak is all so keen on steam powered excursions on their lines, especially those "under the wire" (the catenary on the ex-Pennsylvania Railroad main line). The Norfolk & Western 475 is fine where she is and besides there is no connection at the junction with the PRR, if this were to happen, Amtrak would have to build a connecting track and I don't think Amtrak is all too interested in building a connecting track at the current time, if a business in Strasburg opened and wanted a freight connection, then Amtrak would probably build one for NS, but this is not the time or discussion on freight to Strasburg.
Dpfan1, do us all a favor and think about things and remember, 'With every proposal, comes positives and negatives.'

You don't necessarily need tracks...if you've got $.

It'll just cost you about $50k.:hehe:

according to DP's logic, the EBT should send #12 to run to Pittsburgh from Strasburg...because it would look " KEWL!
