N scale locomotive issue...

Hope everyone had a nice holiday.

I've got an N scale SD40-2 (from KATO) and an F45 (from Athearn) that I would like to run back-to-back (non-DCC, at least for now) on freights. However, the SD40-2 runs much quicker than the F45 with the same amount of juice, so when I run them together, the F45 slows it down a bit. I'm concerned about the effect this might have on the motors.

Does anyone know of a solution to this issue?

The problem is due to a gears and a faster motor and not the voltage and current. This is more so on the gears than on the electronics. I would be afraid of the load this may put on the motor.

I'm probably a bit paranoid, but knowing how much these critters cost, I'd do anything to preserve their lifetime for as long as possible.

I personally would not..they are not compatible..I fear it would put too much load on the motor..They would overheat..Like John said..

Place the locos on a track, and separate the locos by much more than 1 foot ... run them at the desired speed you want, and see which loco catches up to the lead loco.

Place the locos in various directions, as a loco may be faster in reverse or forward (or visa' versa').

The lead loco on a consist should be the faster one, and the slower one on the rear.

I have run HO & N locos as MU consists, and running a model train should not be run continuous (like a store display that burns out locos, running them non-stop, for hours on end), as model trains are meant to be operated non-continuous, giving them time to cool down.

I ran a 36 car HO train for several laps, with 6 locos head end, and 2 more shoving ... but eventually the lead engines picked a switch, or a lead car derailed ... resulting in a spectacularly huge domino effect model train derailment (which took over 1/2 hour to re-rail).

My model RR platform has car catcher raised side walls of masonite strips, as side edging, so my trains can not crash to the rugged floor 42" below.

Wow...cool videos ...I remember as kids we came together and coupled all our sets together ...had to add extra transformers too.
