Mystery Speed Trees

A new and different puzzle this time. I downloaded a rather splendid route in Wales centred around Barmouth. However it has speed trees which I delete as they hog my five year old laptops gpu.

Well at least normally I do.... In this instance the get item button fails to turn up any match so I cannot replace the asset. I can delete the trees, which appear to be a group item but there are rather a lot of them. Properties does not find the object either.

Its got me stumped (excuse the pun), any ideas anyone?

Have a good Easter folks.

Simple explanation for that.

Some of the speedtree groups are configured via the privileges container in their config.txt files to not appear in Surveyor.

You will need to check each of the speedtree groups in Surveyor for the following entry in the config.txt:

permit-listing 0

If it is present, change the 0 to a 1, then save and commit.

A bit long winded but (you need -showkuids in trainz options) if you can get the kuid numbers of the trees/groups then (1) reference those in cm to a specific type or group name then use the replace asset tool.
Scroll down until you find tree/group name and drag it into to be replaced box, put what you want in the other.
Even longer winded including guesswork. If you can find the author id # scroll through the config file and note each kuid down. Then follow as (1).
If your comp stalls on replacing all type of a tree/group at once use the replace current section only with the replace asset tool and scoot along the track end to end replacing trees. Bit of a pain but it works eventually.

I wish I'd waited 5 mins Shane. Some don't permit edit either though, I was looking at the config of some of gawpo50's yesterday. There was permit listing, permit edit and one more I think. Permit commit.

I've noticed that.

For reference:

permit-edit - if this is set to 1, contact the creator if there is a problem with the asset.
permit-listing - as in my post above.
permit-commit - In order to commit the asset, this needs to be 0.

Pogbellies is still stuck though, if permit listing is not allowed in the config and they're not findable using the get tool how's he going to alter the config if he doesn't know which they are. Seems a dumb idea to me.
He's going to have to use my longer winded idea.

I can do a mini-tutorial if needed, as the issue is likely to come up again and again if the long-winded method is used.

I'm just about to start the process, it should be ready in about half an hour or so. I will post a link here when done.

My tutorial on fixing this issue is now live. See http://trainz.shaneturner.co.uk/tut...ing-with-speedtree-not-showing-in-list-issues.

Comments are welcome, but be aware that I haven't got TS2010, so will be unable to provide screenshots of the affected items.

If the item will not open for edit, you will need to contact the creator.

EDIT: Due to a bug in my site software, most of the page is not appearing. I am currently trying to fix the issue.

EDIT: The issue has now been fixed.

First thanks for the info and the comprehensive site. It is sort of becoming the same as the RWTools program that saves RailWorks from the bin. The goal of N3v should be to take a look at your site and and begin a process to eliminate as as many as possible of the workarounds you present. If we are trying to have as realistic as possible virtual railroad experience most of these workarounds are simply a ridiculous burden on the customer and probably looses sales from the new addon revenue stream. Management controls may prevent the staff from pausing in the development of addons and instead borrowing enough from a bank to make the base product more user friendly. The DLC repository, which was once the strength of the product, is now becoming a liability as new customers are plagued with roadblocks and arcane procedures to get things to work.

Thanks very much for your efforts, while I sort of agree with boleyd, there is a slight risk that it could be taken too far and thus limit the degree of customisation possible. That said I cannot really understand why an item would not be made listable unless it was an oversight.

I will agree with you to a certain extent.

I am simply providing the information required to fix certain problems in Trainz - if N3V do not like it, perhaps they should sort it so that it is not necessary to need workarounds (I cannot see that happening, as it would involve them having to release patches for TS2009, TS2010, and TS12 as well as possibly earlier versions) then users would have to install the new patches.

In the case of the speed tree groups, this was stated by N3V to be deliberate to stop them being used as they cause performance issues, they are there only to replace old style bilboard tree groups that were used originally in the builtin routes. I presume they were not thinking people would go around deleting things ;o)
