MP40PH-3C on Amtrak????

Since we are on the subject of Amtrak having this and that engine I wonder if Amtrak will have this engine
jettrain1_gr.jpg

Its called the Bombardier BBRX 2200 Jet Train Its powered by a Jet Turbine and very fast

It looks just like an Acela locomotive whith no pantograph. And as you probably know, Amtrak owns Acela.

P.S. I like the red paint scheme. :D

maybe the MP40PH-3C can be used for amtrak california even though they do have the f59-PHI but maybe replace the p42s and others since some of the times they are short of engines.

MP36's cannot replace F59PHI's or P42's. MP36's are designed for short quick bursts of speed with frequint stops. the P42's are designed for the long haul. and F599's are abou the same as the P42's. so no the MP36 won't be entering amtraks roster anytime soon

same thing as why you don't use a gp50 or GP60 on a drag fright.

The differences and the similarities of a F59PHI, and a MP40PH-3C

The MP40PH has the SAME EXACT PRIME MOVER as a F59PHI (Even MPI used EMD 710E's)
The MP40 is more economical and has a larger HEP generator (Caterpillar V12)

The F59PHI has some features too like mixed brakes, better acceleration etc.

The MP36PH is completely different. Just has a different prime mover (MPI 645E3)

Hope that helps confusion.

Edit: AND Amtrak has been in the consideration of new locomotives since before 2005. But EMD is willing to make more F59PHI's if requested, so MPI isnt alone, but still is the only manufacturer for passengers.

I really don't like the JetTrain, I saw it when it was on tour. Its really fruity... a diesel Acela..... o_O

I personally like these things:

Talgo XXIs fit for North American Standards(EPA, FRA, DOT, ADA, etc.) on North American Rails for the North American passenger stock market. They come in dual mode(turbo-diesel and electric), turbo-diesel, and electric(via pantographs)

They are the fastest running diesel units in the WORLD... running at 159 MPH compared to its predecessor, the British HST, which ran at 125 MPH. They come in a 14-car formation(at the most) in this order:

Power Car(Driving Unit)
End Service Car
Coach Car(x8; 2 First Class, 2 Business, 4 Economy)
Bistro/Cafe Car
Accessible Coach(x3)
End Baggage Car
Power Car(Trailing Unit)

They are soooo awesome XD

That Jettrain was built by Bombardier and it looks cool in my opinion even though its a Acela Powercar without a pantograph and it has a jet turbine instead of electrical components.

P.S. I agree that Amtrak won't be buying any new locomotives anytime soon.

I forget with company that owns that but thats the Jet Train Runs on a Jet Turbine for a more environmental look and its coupler has been modified

Well I heard they are getting 20 new electric engines though, but not diesels.

I thought the Spanish originally had Talgo sets? They ran on 5' 3" guage and weren't extremely fast, but very luxurious.I'm not sure, I might be thinking of something else

I know this kinda old but if you look at it this why amtrak DOES have some mp36ph-3c. Amtrak ones Caltrain and the equipment (so I have been told) but if you look on youtube you will see caltrian mp36 leading the coast starlight north. Just my opinion.:p

While that maybe an MP36 pulling an Amtrak train it is not uncommon for train companies to borrow equipment from another company if they have a bad-order. So most likely the unit was borrowed by Amtrak from Caltrain for that haul. (I've seen BNSF units pulling Amtrak trains, heard of UP & CSX doing the same) But no Amtrak does not own any MP36s or MP40s. The closest looking thing Amtrak has is the F59PHI.

Edit: here is an example; and the caption tells you why.

...I'd say Amtrak has done good power wise. But, Amtrak may in the future need a diesel like a GE P44DC. That would be stronger than anything on the rails now and would be great as a passenger loco for Amtrak or a freight loco for CSX, NS, UP, BNSF, CN, CP, CR, SOO, and KCS.

LOL but you missed my piont. Ya sure Amtrak uses different equipment BUT what im saying I is that amtrak in a SORTA WAY owns them because caltrain is a owned branch from amtrak.

Caltrain is operated by Amtrak but not owned by Amtrak. It's owned by the City of SF (and neighboring communities).

AmCal equiptment is also owned by the State of Cal, not Amtrak.

Time to go yell at a few people. Thanks for the CORRECT information.

Amtrak DOES still use the F40s, I think. If I recall correctly, they were being renumbered into 5-digit locos, and being used as Cab Cars on short distance lines like the Hiawatha (Chicago-Milwaukee/Madison). If the F40's were being sent to Metra, then there would be less need for their Motive Power (MPI) engines.

Also, I think I read in Trains magazine that AMTK has just started overhauling Superliners, and purchased some new Genesis engines. However, they seem to be doing just fine on power these days. Unless they bring the Pioneer back... ugh. That would be a waste of money. But the Desert Wind would be nice.

Correct me if I'm wrong on any of this. I'm a kid. What do I know?

The Superliners are almost done being refurbished.
Most of the F40PHs have been converted to NPCUs (either cabbages or Cascades)
Metra is also phasing out their F40s in favor of the MPIs.
I haven't heard anything about them buying new engines.
No plans for a new Desert Wind run by Amtrak. There are some private plans being put forth however.

Amtrak is currently in the market for new Viewliner equiptment. Including: Baggage Cars, Dorm-Bags, & Diners.
