Moving Trainz to New Disk??

It was easy to copy TS2012 to a new disk. However, does anyone know how to change things so DLS recognizes new location?

I'm going to assume you mean having stuff download from the DLS website into the new location. I don't know what register keys are involved but if you have Content Manager running then whatever you click on through the DLS website will go into that version. If you the cdp file on your computer already, you can just drag and drop it on the CM window to install the cdp file. This works with multiple files and folders that contain assets.

If you mean a new hard disk then all you need to do is click copy and paste into the new disc. Don't use "cut" and paste because if anything goes wrong during the transfer you will still have the original to try again. When it has moved over and you know it works you can just delete the original copy.

I suspect you're talking about automatic "open with" instead of "save as", two different things;

1. For the Windows file association, right click any CDP file, select Open With, Choose Program, then Browse to point it to TheNewDisk\TS12\bin\contentmanager.exe ("TheNewDisk" being whatever drive number and path you put it in) and check the box for "always use the selected program to open this type of file".

For Firefox, to get it to open with content manager from the new location, Tools, Options, click the Applications tab and find Content Dispatcher Pack and select "Use Other" then browse to the new location.

I dunno what it is for internet exploder, I gave up trying to figure out that contraption back in the days of Netscape Navigator. www.mozilla.org will get you Firefox if you don't have it. I'm sure someone will recommend Chrome but in my opinion google is no longer trustworthy and the one time I tried Chrome it was loaded with bloatware I had no use for.

Internet Explorer normally follows Windows's file associations, but if you are using Windows Vista or 7, simply running Content Manager once as administrator should set up the required data.

You might not want to hear this. I don't want to get on a high horse here, but here goes: You should have installed T12 to the new drive, and then copied the User files from the old installation to the new HD. Just coping a program from one location to another will screw things up in your Windows Registry especially a program like Trainz, you are asking for trouble down the road.

I considered following the proper process but I was in a hurry and knew a simple copy/paste to a new location gave me a working copy, which it did. I had hoped that someone knew where the registry pointer was for using the Download Helper function in the DSL That seemed the fastest way.

Well, since there are 172 Trainz entries in my registry that is out. Did the Open With relation but not the final answer. It seems that the Content Manager that is chosen from the DLS is the last one used (probably a secret registry entry). Since I will only be using the new copy that is not a problem.

Thanks to all.....

Did Joe's cousin's uncle's aunt's daughter's cleaning lady tell you that she heard that from her shoemaker, or do you know it from personal experience? I've had several copies of TS2010 and TS12 running on a different computer that has never had Trainz installed on it and has no information about an install path in the system registry. Copying programs, files, and folders from one place to another will not damage the system registry.

Dick, try it again, make sure you're pointing it to the correct drive and folder, and doublecheck you check the box for "always use the selected program to open this type of file". That should change the file extension association to open any CDP overwriting whatever the latest install set as the file association. Obviously if you're running Vista or Windows 7 you need to fiddlefaddle with all that administrator UAC stuff so it doesn't pretend to allow your changes while laughing up its sleeve and keeping the original.

The association works and is locked in. UAC off since Day-1. I do not think that the DLS submits a CDP file to the Content Manager but transfers by some other means. The target Content Manager being the last one used as shown somewhere in the Registry.

Anyhow, I will only be using the new copy thus it is always Last Used.
I bought the disk for the 6.0Gbs xfer and the 32mb buffer. Trainz stutters and flashes as well as pops up things. I have to get back to testing to see if I wasted $70 on a 750gb disk.

Correct - it does not submit a .cdp file.

Instead, it uses the trainz: protocol which instructs Content Manager which asset to download.

Running Content Manager once should set up the association.

You are talking about oranges and I apples. You did notice I said "program" which is inferred an executable file. And I said nothing about copying a program to a different computer, which he did not do. I stand by what I said earlier. If you think copying has no effect, copy MS Office from one drive to another, remove the original, and lets see what happens!

Copying programs doesn't hurt a thing, deleting them might, it depends on which program. It doesn't "screw up the system registry" though, merely stops the deleted program working the same as if you had just deleted it without copying to a different location.

Microsoft Train Simulator for example apparently never heard of .cfg files since the user settings for screen size and other options are stored in system registry keys, so if you just copy the game over to another computer you have to reset all the options each time you exit the game and restart. Trainz is self contained, will work from any location even after the original installation is deleted or uninstalled.

Trainz is not MS Office. Due to the lack of copy-protection, as well as the extensive integration into Windows itself, Trainz really does not need any of the registry entries, save for the file association, and that is only a convenience. None are really "needed".

This is not to say that reinstalling Trainz is wrong; it'll work just fine if one wants to take the extra time. You'll need to patch too because at least one of the registry entries contains build number. The method Sniper and I use is simply a shortcut if you know how to do it.

I stopped counting after 20 Registry entries. The developers must have put them there for a reason besides the trainz build number! And besides uninstalling does not take all of that time vs copying files that are at least 52GB+. Besides if you are having problems with your installation, you are just copying the problems from one location to another.

I Did...this

 Use the Uninstall.exe file in the Trainz Folder...it saves al important data in the same folder. It is also listed in the Start/N3V (or)Auran Trainz/TSxx/Uninstall Trainz.

Install to the next drive using ?:\TSxx with ? being the drive number and xx being your version moving.

Trainz will recognize the previous install. Just make sure you see the correct entry path.

Use a registry cleaner, to do so. Mine comes with Norton 360.

It's hard to believe TS2009 will run on an external hard drive through a USB 2.5 cable!:hehe:
